Can this stabilizer rest on the roof, or does it have to rest against the wall?

I think it could but would not be stable. Best against the wall. On the roof it would be at an angle and would probably slip. Because of my age, I used the wall and had a large C clamp to put on the 2 by 6 with a rope attache to me in case latter would slide or disconnect.

Will this fit an old Keller 24' aluminum with D rungs?

If it's a standard size ladder it should fit. The stand-off fits extension & single ladders with rail up to 4" x 1 3/4" and D-rung. Holds ladders 12" from walls & spans 48" to clear most windows and can be adjusted across the width.

Need to clean gutters and have vinyl. Appears, even though I have unit, I now find out it won't stand off against roof?

It is designed to use on a wall but I also have vinyl and have a small addition that is flat enough for a membrane roof. I can use the end (with no gutter) to place the ladder on the facia and since it is covered with aluminum does no damage. I would suggest getting gutter screens to avoid this task completely.

What is the stand off with it attached to the ladder?

I haven't measured but in my case it solved my problem. Basically -- I am painting my house and I was facing a particular problem. At the roof line, how can I take off the gutters while the ladder is sitting on them. The stand off made it possible to stand off from the roof itself. Anyway, the width is equal to a typical American window width and the stand off it about 6 inches at the top. Hope that was a little helpful ....

Never climb a ladder without a stabilizer!

This unit is easy to install and makes such a difference with your ladder experience. #1 It saves the edges of your shingles from being destroyed. #2 It saves your gutters or trim from getting scratched up and damaged. #3 It stabilizes your climb. The ladder doesn't slide from right to left. #4 It helps prevent the ladder from sliding out beneath you since the weight is transferred to the roof. This is VERY important. Talk with someone who has had a ladder slide and you'll never want to use a ladder without a stabilizer again!

a handy thing to have for my ladders when working at or above the roofline.

I like that I can use this on various ladders and it spreads the weight of the ladder and the person on it when working on gutters and the like. Before getting this I put some dents on a couple of my gutters. It is easy to take off the ladder but clumsy to get on.

This was the perfect SAFETY addition to my 10 ft ladder. The installation was a breeze. I did have to place a 1/2 shim between the bar and the ladder which I read in other reviews. Its padded so it doesn't scratch your shingles and has a good grip on shingles. I think it does the job for a homeowner who uses a straight ladder. As a matter of fact, I bought it install gutter guards around my house, about 230 feet of them.

Good universal stabilizer

I am afraid of heights and have been avoiding go up on my roof to remove old satellite dishes for years. I finally bought this to help me feel more comfortable going up on the roof. And it lived up to the expectations. It made the ladder much more stable even as I was reaching as far as I could and carried a heavy satellite down with me. It was easy and quick to attach it to the little giant ladder.

Made very well, easy install

Just received the stabilizer today. Took about 10 minutes to install on my extension ladder, super easy. The materials are very strong. Worked great so I clean my gutters. We just had new gutters installed so I didn't want to scratch them. The stabilizer made my ladder feel very secure, wish I had got this years ago!
