Q: can this be installed in an existing bathroom by just cutting the wall to fit this niche?

Yes, it is designed to fit in between a standard 16 inch on center 2X4 stud separation that the home builders build to. You must screw it to solid 2X4 studding in your bath/shower stall. Normally, you would also replace the wallboard first with something called cement board. It is water resistant and is used instead of Sheetrock, YouTube has good videos showing how to install one of these. It is very important that you do it correctly, so that it does not leak and rot the sub-floor around your stall. Good luck.

Q: Does this come with the screws?

No. I used a cement type of wallboard for the interior of my shower. i forget what it is called exactly but it is water resistant. They have special screws for this board, similar to sheetrock screws but different. I used those to screw the insert to the studs/wallboard.

Q: What is the angle of the shelf?

Just enough to allow for the water to run off the shelf.

Q: It says polymer modified thinset - can you use non modified? I'm installing with a shluter membrane that needs non modified cement.

Use whatever the manufacturer says to use. The differences between modified and unmodified mortar are : modified mortar has a latex additive that gives mortar a stronger adhesion and better water retention in the cement which makes the mortar much stronger because it cures better over time. Always use the manufacturer’s instructions as they have done the research and testing on their own products.
