Seven strangers, each with a secret to bury, meet at Lake Tahoe's El Royale, a rundown hotel with a dark past. Over the course of one fateful night, everyone will have a last shot at redemption... before everything goes to hell. Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dakota Johnson and Cynthia Erivo lead an all-star cast in BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE.

Great little noir movie
Drew Goddard continues his trend of telling character driven stories in a confined space and time. That's what this movie is. It tells the backstory of the people that rented a room in the El Royale hotel, during a day and night in the late 1960s. It shows how their stories evolve and intertwine throughout the movie, employing flashbacks to show each character's origin. All the cast is top notch Here. Jeff Bridges, Jon Hamm and Cynthia Erivo are standouts, among greats. The soundtrack is amazing as well, and Erivo shows her vocal talents in the movie multiple times. There are enough twists and turns to keep you engaged througout the fairly long 2 hours and 20 minute movie, but, as the plot and characters are engaging, it never feels slow or boring. The 4K looks and sounds great, the only thing lacking are the Extras. There is a fairly rudimentary documentary in the Blu-ray disc about the making of the movie , and not much else. Still, the movie is worth owning on its own merits.

Watchable
A good ensemble cast and a very involved plot make this a very watchable film. As others have mentioned, it is very much like a film that Quentin Tarantino might have made, but had he done so, I think it would have been about 10% better and earned five stars from me.

Not the greatest, but worth a watch
Ok film. Worth a watch for a bit of eye candy with that Hemsworth guy, but nothing that exciting happens, you're kind of left waiting for the point of it all. Good soundtrack.

If you like Tarantino... and Chris Hemsworth....
Really enjoyed this - very Tarantino (nothing bad about that in my opinion), a stylish set that I swear I've seen in at least one other film, and with some good casting and performances, it was a cracking night's entertainment. In the final scene I did wonder why they needed those fires roaring, when Chris Hemsworth easily raised the temperature to melting point and burned down the house all by himelf, aided by those jeans just about clinging to his hips.... Phew - going to get a cool glass of water now.

NOT A HOTEL TO BE RECOMMENDED ?
Welcome to the El-Royale ?....a once thriving but now run-down hotel on the California and Nevada border, in fact, part of the hotel lies in both states, with different rules applying depending on what part you are in..A hotel that harbours many secrets both in it's past and indeed it's present (1969)These days there is only one employee Miles Miller (Lewis Pullman) related to the hotels' original owners, he's a seemingly mild-mannered character, but?On this evening four complete strangers turn up at the hotel each harbouring dark secrets and reasons for being there. An apparent Priest Father Daniel Flynn (Jeff Bridges) an aspiring soul singer Darlene Sweet (Cynthia Arivo) an apparent drop-out Emily Summerspring (Dakota Johnson) who is seemingly holding a hostage played by (Cailee Spaeny). and takes instructions and guidance from a sadistic cult-leader Billy Lee (Chris Hemsworth) who will turn up on the scene a bit later..The fourth person turning up is an apparent salesman Laramie Seymour Sullivan / Dwight Broadbeck (John Hamm) who is, in fact, an undercover F.B.I agent sent to the hotel to investigate strange reports of illegal equipment being used at the hotel. The film explores each of the characters from a time leading up to and indeed in some cases from the past giving a reason for them being there at that time.Got to say, this is a very unusual film, however, a film that strangely, as long as it is, does hold one's attention throughout. There is music and mayhem along the way and deadly turns of events....will anyone survive their stay at the hotel?Certainly worth a viewing.
