Q: have a standard hose coming out of my tumble dryer. Will I be able to fix grille onto the hose . Is the attachment bit round to connect direct to hose

You could, but a more correct way would be to put a flange on the internal side of the wall, with a fixed pipe inside the wall connecting the two. If you put a flexible hose into the wall and it comes lose or gets torn rubbing against the brickwork, it could end up pumping moisture into your wall cavity, which is bad news. Anyway, stay away from THIS brand/product, as it's cheap junk with no insect filter or anything.

If you mean opening from the bottom side of each flap, that's the intended way, so the flaps fall closed with their own weight, but the dryer air blows them open to escape. Facing down as in the hole faceplate parallel with the ground below, like mounted under a roof edge? No, the flaps would be hanging open all the time, and you've basically built a bat box / wasps' nest.

Q: This looks like a matching replacement but behind mine is a rectangular 'slot' 2" by 4 1/2" and about 3" deep. Same thing ?

Behind this cover are small (1/2 inch) 'wings' arranged in a circular pattern, allowing it to be located in the vent hole. Screw holes for fixing to wall if necessary.

Q: How far apart are the fixings?

Just measured, and distance between the holes is approx 11cm.
