This one is a perfect replacement for a much lower price
I lost my Suunto version of this that I had for years, and I use it as a cinematographer to know exactly where the sun will be when we shoot. This one is a perfect replacement for a much lower price. It's solidly built, very similar to the Suunto, and in fact if it were handed to me without me knowing, I would have thought it was made by Suunto except for the little Steren label. Even the red lanyard is the same. My iPhone has the Helios app on it to tell me the Azimuth and Inclination, and while I can use the iPhone itself for most locations to get me a rough indication, I find that it's not as accurate as I sometimes need to be. If it's critical to know when the sun will come through a window or the light will be perfect (or when the light will become terrible), this is a great product.

Have any of these 5 star reviews come from people who even took the time to use the compass?
Here's my observations about this device, and the issue I have has more to do with the odd reviews rather than the device itself.1) I read comments from the manufacturer about mounting this on a tripod. Please explain how you can manage to purchase a 100% plastic, or 100% aluminum tripod with no metal parts so that the metal doesn't interfere with the compass magnet? This oversight exposes the fact that the manufacturer has never actually mounted this device on a tripod. For anyone who would like to know, it won't work. The metal in the tiny screw that goes into the aluminum threads will pull the compass. You can go to some hardware store and purchase a brass screw, but that's not enough, there are other larger screws on your tripod that you will need to replace with brass, or aluminum, and some tripod screws, the large ones can't be replaced without replacing the entire handle, and this would make the tripod useless.2) The compass is so badly out of balance, that the vertical sight line crosses the degree markings at an angle. The angle is about 15 to 20 degrees making the final reading impossible to determine. Does the manufacturer even take the time to balance the compass dial? If I return for a replacement, will the next one be just as unballanced?

Old fashioned approach is best...
I am an amateur radio operator and radio enthusiast. I have a DirectTV satellite for my trailer. What makes this old fashioned, highly accurate instrument special is that it does not depend on batteries or cellular service. I use this instrument for locating AMSAT and DirectTV satellites. I also use it calibrate the dish on my home to ensure that I have the strongest possible signal.I highly recommend it.
