Q: What's the most abuse it can endure without snapping?

A sword doesn't usually snap unless it cracks first. Just inspect your blade when oiling and cleaning. This will bend like crazy dozens of times before snapping is even an option. I have bent one of these countless times.

Q: how sharp is it, and how durable is it for cutting?

The sword arrived with a very clean, sharp edge. After cutting several pieces of green bamboo approx. 3" in dia, the blade only showed a slight scratch without any curling or nicks. Overall the blade, specifically the edge, remained the very sharp and stable. I have also completed the "paper cut" test with the Katana. It slices the paper very cleanly with no dragging. I have even cut a branch off a live tree approx 1" in diam. (not the best way to use the katana) without any nicks or dulling of the edge.

Q: Is this actually clay-tempered?

Yes it has the Harmon line that is found on the blade that is clay-tempered. For the money it is a good buy. It not like the 500 year old blade but it does not cost $5000 +. You should like it.

Q: Is this a "cutting" sword... (Live blade) or is it just a sharp well made display?

Definitely a live full tang blade that deserves more than a display rack. Razor sharp out of the box, solid hand hammered steel (you can see the real steel fold marks on the blade). I purchased two of these blades, one for myself and one for my friend's wedding gift. We used the swords to chop everything from melons, cabbage, onions, baseballs, and even moose bones at his bachelor party. We even had a mild sparing session to test blade on blade impact durability. Despite all of that the blades held a nice edge and had no visible nicks or cracks.
