With this set there is no top or bottom to the pestle, so just pick and end to work with. Don't kid yourself, it takes effort to get both the mortar and pestle smooth enough to use. View the YouTube video Conditioning Granite Mortar and Pestle.

Q: Can I grind almond, walnut and brazil nuts in it.?

Yes, you can. You have to spend a bit of time to grind down the mortar and pestle (to make them smooth) before you use the set, but after that you are ready to go. I love mine.
