What size filters fit the FF305 fan?

The ACTUAL size of the filter that comes with the unit is 19.5 x 19.5 x .75. So when you try to stuff an actual 20x20x1 into the housing, it doesn't fit-up properly at the bottom, and distorts the plastic housing slightly which exacerbates the problem. I put in a 3M Filtrete 20x20x1 MERV 11 and it crushes the filter cardstock frame. This is irritating considering the cost of premium filters. The product information should really be specific about this detail.

Will the motor overheat while using a merv-13 20x20x1? i've experienced overheating in other lasko fans in diy air filter setups using a 1inch filter.

The FF305 was specifically designed to ensure there would not be any motor burn out regardless of what 20x20x1 filter was placed in the unit. That is based on the motor and the filter housing. Please note though, there would be a reduction in air flow if you went from a MERV 10 to a MERV 13 filter just as you would see an increase in air flow if you went from a MERV 13 to a MERV 10. Just remember to regularly change whatever filter you choose to use.

Does the filter go on the "back" or "front" ("intake" or "output") side of the fan?

The filter goes in the compartment on the back of the fan, the intake side. I love these fans. They are invaluable during allergy and wildfire season.
