Customizable whey protein alternative
Though I've been a regular whey protein user for years, I thought to give plant-based protein powders a try. What attracted me to Gainful was their inclusion of flavor packets. Consuming the same flavor of protein powder day after day can get boring. So, giving consumers the ability to switch up flavors is smart IMO.The base Gainful Vegan Protein powder itself has a relatively mild earthy taste thanks to the pea protein. In general, the flavor sticks confer enough of a flavor ("boost") to mask the base taste. I found that chocolate, strawberry, sea salt caramel, and chocolate peanut butter flavor boosts to be the tastiest. The vanilla flavor boost was decent, however the flavor was weaker than other vanilla flavored protein powders I've used. The powder and flavor boosts mixed easily in my shaker bottle, both with water and non-dairy milk. Compared to whey protein, pea protein is grittier. Not off-putting, just a noticeable difference in texture. Another difference I found is that pea protein builds up static electricity more readily than whey protein. This means that scooping the Gainful Vegan Protein out of the bag tends to be a messy affair; the powder easily flies out of the bag and sticks to surfaces. Though clean-up is not difficult, I still found this aspect of pea protein to be a bit of a nuisance.Overall, I enjoyed my first experience with a vegan protein powder. Gainful Vegan Protein mixes well, offers flavor customization, and provides a good amount of protein (20 grams) per serving. The cost per serving is on the high side compared to the many whey options that exist, so I'm not quite ready to make the full jump away from whey.

A little grainy, but not awful
Ive used a lot of protein powders and most of the vegan ones are grainy and I just expect that to a degree. This one is also a little grainy, you can overcome this by stretching the liquid- I often make mine into a latte- or blending it with ice. I also use vegan proteins to make ice cream in my ninja creami. The base is unflavored and it comes with flavor sticks you can use to change the flavor and add sweetness which is very unique. The base does have a grains flavor to it, but not overwhelming. It helps me stay full until my next meal and I feel good drinking this after a workout or as a meal replacement.

Chalky
I love the whey protein, but the vegan protein has a chalky texture that takes over the flavor. Will not be getting this one again unfortunately

Good quality, but always end up needing at least two flavor packets; leaves extra unflavored powder.
The title about sums it up. This protein is good quality, the flavors taste good and the powders mix well, but I always end up needing to use at least two flavor packets for a ~12-16 oz shake, which means I end up blowing through the packets much faster and I'm left with extra unflavored protein, and no packets to flavor it with. I don't know if the intention is to eventually sell the flavors separately--NOT a fan of that business model if that's the case--but as it currently stands, it's not a sustainable usage because I can only obtain the packets by ordering a full kit and that's way too expensive. So now I'm back to using my previously preferred brand.I think the idea behind this protein is an interesting concept; have a plain base and then flavoring as desired. But I think maybe it's not seen more often because it just doesn't end up being practical in the long run. It ends up requiring more packaging material because the flavor packs are individual packets, and then those are packaged separate from the actual protein, so that seems like a lot of material waste for something that could just already be combined. It's also just generally more effort, having to have to open, add into the shake, and then dispose of multiple flavor packets; not a lot more effort of course, but consider that normally there's no packaging to be opened or disposed of when you scoop protein out of a tub and into a shaker or blender. I think it's far more practical and cost effective to just have the powder already flavored.Unfortunately, I don't know if I recommend this product. I want to emphasize that this is GOOD quality protein. It tastes good, it mixes well, the packaging even looks nice. But right now, I have to use two packets of flavoring for what I consider a normal sized shake otherwise it's watery and bland. That means running out of flavors early, because you're technically supposed to only use one per serving. Running out of flavors early means you're left with unflavored protein powder. At the moment, the only way to get more flavor packets is to order a whole new kit, which is not only expensive per serving, but then the cycle will repeat. I suspect the intention is to eventually sell additional flavor packs separately, but that then means you're having to spend even MORE money just to add flavor--not even more protein or nutrition--to the protein you already bought. So do what you will with that information.

Tastes Great
I love this Vegan protein powder. It mixes very well with my almond milk in my shaker bottle and it tastes great. I also like the fact you can use the different flavor sticks with the unflavored protein powder, my favorite is the strawberry. I used this for protein muffins and it worked very well. It is smooth and not gritty. I do wish the flavor packets were a bit larger, I have added 2 just to get a stronger flavor. I like that I can choose different flavors without purchasing different flavored protein powders.
