Q: Will this connector substitute for 18-2 wire

As you are asking if this is a substitute, my assumption is that you have a certain configuration method that you wish to use. Unfortunately, I cannot answer that, but I can advise on the use of the mechanism. Basically, the unit is open. 22 gauge wire is inserted into 2 holes at one end. The wire simply needs to be cut, but not striped of the insulation. The + wire corresponds to the + connection on the COB LED strip. Finally, press the part of the connector with the holes on to the open part with the metal forks. This will puncture the insulation and complete the connection. I purchased some 22 gauge 2 conductor stranded wire for the application, and found that the insulation on the red and black wires was too thick to be inserted into the holes so I had to do a workaround. Since 22 gauge wire is smaller in diameter to 18 gauge wire, it is highly unlikely that the 18 gauge wire will fit the holes of the clip.

Q: I have ordered these twice. Both times the heat from the strip is so hot you can't touch it. To hot to touch are they safe???

I have two 12' strips in one curio cabinet and haven't had an issue with heat. The only thing that gets warm is the power supply.

These are the 2-pin connectors for COB strip lights. A pack of 10pcs. Not including the wire and COB strip lights.

Q: Can this connector be used in a system with a dimmer?

I have the same connectors on my COB LED strips with a dimmer and an ON/OFF switch. They work great.
