A Unique Journey
I just finished My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, and it was an intriguing read. The story follows a young woman in New York City who decides to embark on a year-long journey of hibernation through sleep and pharmaceuticals. Moshfegh's writing is sharp and darkly humorous, capturing the complexities of modern life, loneliness, and the search for meaning. I found the protagonist both relatable and frustrating, which made for a compelling narrative. The book offers a fresh perspective on self-care and the extremes one might go to in order to escape reality. It’s definitely a thought-provoking novel that lingers long after you’ve turned the last page!

I'm haunted
I have a list of books categorised under the heading,"deranged women" that I plan on reading because I thought it was funny to do so. This book happened to be on the top of the list because the summary just grabbed my attention and also because there were a lot of hype around it in the literary world. But now that I finished reading it,I'm just devastated 😭. The last few chapters were so hauntingly beautiful it left me a bit traumatized. Every significant character in the book is deeply flawed in their own ways and you can't help but find yourself in every one of them. Some of the things the protagonist says are so brutally honest that it makes you question your own moral compass. All in all,a great read. I'll surely read more books from the author

the narrator omg
Liked how the narrator explores the concept of alienation but after a few pages it really gets boring :(

She is the classic mean girl who's fed up of emotions
Absolutely loved this book. It was funny with no particular plot but a very unique concept. (Just vibes)The (anti) protagonist here is a privileged, rich adult living in the year 2000 who is in denial of her depression and is calling it her year of rest and relaxation. The way the story is narrated will absolutely have the readers convinced that she's fine. She's fed up of society and socializing (honestly same). This book is witty for most of the part and our (anti) heroine is everything that the society doesn't like in a woman- in short she has a personality. Most of you will hate her (she looks and has the aura of the classic mean girl) but honestly I've liked her from the start. Not for being a privileged rich adult ( how can she be privileged, she's an orphan now), but I understand her need for rest and her need for not interacting with anyone. Also this depicts the serious problem of drug abuse that America faces on regular basis. There's just all kinds of addiction surrounding America which is it's downfall honestly.Along with this, the whole book revolves around sickness and death and the grief that it brings along with it.Apart from the theme, the best part is the narrator, that is the protagonist herself.

Do not forget to check the trigger warnings.
I wish I could agree with the popular reviews of this book that regards this as made up problems of a rich white blonde girl, but I simply cannot. The essence of My Year of Rest and Relaxation lies in its nothingness and despite the controversy regarding the "sad hot girl" status of the book, it is disheartening that most people who could appreciate the book has witnessed similar experiences in one form or another. This was my first book by Ottessa Moshfegh, I had previously read about how raw and undeniably real she is with her writing and what a stirring piece of writing this was! The unnamed narrator is equipped with all the necessities that are required to keep a person inherently jovial, nevertheless, she succumbed to the unhinged world of emptiness. The absence of parental figures, a baneful relationship with her Wall Street boyfriend or the unbelievable being in the name of a friend, can all be blamed for the heedless direction that her life had taken. Popping a bunch of pills and going in a hibernation for a year seemed like an engrossing plan for her to eliminate the burdening weight of existence. One year to rest and recuperate. When she'll wake up, she'll be fresh as a daisy! The sense of being unable to function when the listlessness creeps inside is unfortunately a very familiar feeling. There's procrastination, there's hope, that maybe tomorrow is going to be a better day? Till then, all I want is to rest.
