Does the lcd panel let you access factory settings usually a code entry to tune the heater ?

Yes I believe you can access the main setting system with a code, unfortunately I don't know the code

What battery does the remote control need?

The whole unit is controlled via your 12v battery supply or from a step up/down DC transformer as long as it’s 12volt. C/W a 20 amp fuse. The controller takes its power jointly with the heater from your chosen power supply. Great for a vehicle conversion.

Can it be used safely at night in an occupied caravan?

Exactly the purpose it’s designed for, heating any area with a fixed heating system. Providing you install it as per the manufacturer’s installation instructions. In addition always safer to have couple of new co2 monitor/alarms. Air is drawn in from the local environment around the heater so just ensure the heater exhaust is well away outside the vehicle away from windows doors ducts and alike so as air is not drawn back into the vehicle. Very easy to install. You will need a 100mm metal collar to sink into floor to protect from heat of the exhaust from any combustible material you may have in an installed location other than where you are fixing it to a metal surface that won’t mind the heat.
