These are delightful books to read to little children! In fact, I keep a ready supply in my “gift carabiner” for friends who have recently had grandchildren. The prose rhymes, which helps even toddlers to repeat the final word of each line. The artwork is charming and encourages children to find objects they see in their every day lives in England. I first discovered these books at Charing Cross Book Store during our first trip to London. And, even though my own children now have teenagers, I can easily recall each line, having read it so many times to my kids and grandkids. These books evoke precious bedtime memories.

I have raised four children and bought books for numerous nieces, nephews, and greats. Now my first grandchild is on the way, and rather than ask anyone to relinquish their childhood treasure (originally only available as a regular book), I decided to order another.Here's the thing: you never know which book will turn into THAT book ("Read it again!") Don't burden yourself with an insipid children's book that will make you want to scream when you have to read it multiple times, or every single night. And that's the magic here. There's a peek-a-boo feature (a die cut in one page showing something on the following page), but there's also a richly detailed setting. For a long time, you will be finding new things on the page that you missed before. On top of that, we have an historical element, because the father wears a service uniform that I am guessing is WWII UK. There's a victory garden out back of the baby's home. There is so much here...and babies love it, love it, love it.

My kids & i loved this becsuse we also read stories featuring the characters in the book. I question how many kids have those stories read to them(?) but the book is lovely even if tye child does not know the background of the featured characters.

This was a favorite of our kids - and us. 25 years later, thinking through of all of our favorite Childress's books, we purchased this copy as a gift.

This book is, I believe, a British import. The language has changed to be more consistent with American usage, though.My nieces love this book, they love counting "One, two, three - PEEK-A-BOO!" with me and pointing at things through the cut-out holes in the book. I don't have any problems with the book (except one scene where, confusingly, the image shown in a mirror in no way reflects what's really going on. Very odd, and I wonder if the mirror was originally intended to be a photograph), however some people might have trouble explaining some of the more old-fashioned imagery.Many of us nowadays are going back to hanging clothes outside, so that's all right, and a clothes-horse for indoor drying is okay, and a bucketful of coal is explainable, and... well, it does add up. If you have a very inquisitive sort of child, you might get tired of answering all their questions, that's all. (On the other hand, knowledge of different things broadens the mind.)So I took off one single star.
