Old tech but bullet proof tech for safe keep of digital contents
The media could not be loaded. I like to have physical backup of my important photos and videos and this external DVD writer is perfect for what I need.Plug in the USB cable and windows 10 auto detect it as a dvd writer. Insert a blank disk and windows will ask you what would you like to do with it and I choose default write data to disk etc.Drag and drop all import files onto the DVD folder and wait for it to finish. Press the open button and windows will finalise the disc and eject one safe to do so.It works with all my old CD and DVD+ disks but not DVD- , not sure if it is my Bach of DVD- is the problem but it does not like them. I stick to my usual 4.7gb DVD+ discIt works on my Gaming PC and my sons laptop so not having built in optical drive is no longer an issue for physical back up

Doesn’t work
Yes this reads cds fine, as well as dvd’s. But every time I’ve tried to burn a cd with music on it it completely fails, ruining the cd. Tried different brands of cd-r’s as well and it doesn’t burn any of them.

'Old-school' USB2.0 linked CD/DVD player
The integrated CD/DVD player in my seven-year-old Sony laptop no longer plays CDs. This low-cost and compact USB2.0-connected CD/DVD player economically provides the CD playing and 'rip' functionalities I needed to replace. The Windows 10 software 'installed' the unit without any comment or fuss. I opened the 'Devices' list and there it was.For convenience, given a lack of desk space, I use the Windows 10 software to 'remove' the device after each use.I haven't tried to burn CDs and have no requirement to do that, so I cannot comment on any related power issuesThe player is also provided with a USB2.0/aux plug style lead, but I haven't used it. Frankly, I don't know what it is for.

Cheap but works well
Comes in a plain brown box plug it into your USB port. (note it requires 2 free ports ) to run. But works well windows detected it no problem. For the price it's worth getting. I rarely use disks anymore so handy to keep in a draw till needed.

Temperamental but good when it works
The issues with this are as follows;firstly - the drive isn't always recognised, which is frustrating because when unplugged and plugged back in 10 seconds later it will then be recognised.secondly - the disc tray is poorly made, in that it seems to get caught on the top of the front shell so a bit of gentle persuasion is needed. This shouldn't be the case.lastly - the write speed varies and it makes no sense why. I can only give my experience of using CD's but it was different across different CD's, all the same.It will work but if you can't get over the niggles as mentioned above then i'd look elsewhere.
