Q: Are these seals heavy and will it keep cereal from going stale?

They are very heavy, actually bigger than I originally thought. I don't use them for cereal but for coffee grounds instead. It keeps my coffee fresh for 2 weeks but then starts getting weaker. If you are worried about young kids lifting them, get something else but other than that they are really good. The seal works well compared to others. But actual cereal holders work better. One of the reasons they are so nice is, not only because you can see what’s in each of them since they are glass, but, also, the fact that they state they are BPA free, and non-toxic. Also, if you Google the jars, you will find that they also advertise them as lead free on multiple sites.
