Q: By going with this speaker, could I then forgo a dedicated subwoofer?

You could go without a subwoofer if you combine this with the 9060 or 9080 front speakers. I have all 3 along my front and haven't missed a sub at all. These speakers have plenty of low end.

Q: Does the AC cord still need to be plugged in if I do not want to use the built in sub?

Speakers work just fine without the power cord. Power cord is strictly for the built-in subwoofer.

Q: Is it worth buying the cs-9080 over this? (as the Amazon price difference is only 60 bucks between the two right now)

Considering a $60 difference, yes I would recommend the CS-9080. The center channel is the most important speaker in a surround sound system. It is called upon the most in movie soundtracks.

No but have two svs subs and love them. The svs has no powered sub3
