Compact size but very heavy-duty w/thick side, base & lid -- great for so many uses!
This is such a versatile little cast iron Dutch oven. I have been wanting a cast ion mortar and pestle and so far the largest one I have found is 16-ounces and I ended up ordering it. The pestle is great -- very heavy and solid and it is very sturdy. However, the mortar doesn't quite measure up -- it seems rather small in comparison to the pestle and it is also considerably lighter in weight than I expected + the sides and base are fairly thin (for cast iron, anyway). I thought this Dutch oven might make a good substitute for the mortar even though it doesn't have the usual rounded bottom. It works perfectly! And the entire construction is very heavy and robust with very thick sides and base. This will be useful for so many other things, too. I like the cute shape and I'll be using it for butter on baking day, for BBQ sauce when grilling and it is excellent for small meals for just one. I like the heavy-duty lid, too; it has a flat top to allow coals to be placed on it if the oven is to be nestled in a campfire and there is a ridge around the inner circumference to help keep it in place, but still allow enough movement so I can actually open it when I want to. The logo and little loop handle has a charming, vintage look, too. Of course, being made of cast iron, this will need occasional seasoning. The price is fantastic, as well. I'm very happy to have found this...

Cast iron
Very good quality cast iron for the price! Seems to be durable and was definitely bigger than I thought which was a plus.

Sandpaper in cast iron form
It's like the casting sand used was made of freshly crushed glass shards or something. You could literally sand down a piece of wood on the inside surface, and I'm not talking Lodge rough. At least Lodge takes the time to knock down the sharp edges with their steel tumbler process. This thing is just ROUGH.Before anyone says that all asian made cast iron is like this, the Walmart brand cast iron isn't that bad. I have a camp chef asian made dutch oven that isn't this bad. This stansport dutch oven is the worst example I have seen to date.Pitting and small voids in the lid, obvious casting defects. Would have been rejected by other companies quickly. Not by Stansport. Now, for why I only knocked off one star: it probably functions just fine. I like that it has no legs, makes it easier to pack. I can sand down the rough surfaces, although I'd rather not waste the time. It was also half the price of a Lodge. You get what you pay for, eh?

Good quality
It is a true cast iron; my husband uses it on our grill to fry and he loves how it stays hot and fries our food perfectly.

Perfectly sized for two people
I've hesitated before to use a "normal" sized Dutch oven when it's just the two of us to cook supper and I either don't have enough to make a big batch or for some other reason just don't want leftovers. This 2 quart DO does the trick beautifully. As for the quality of the pot itself, it is as good of a pot as one can find these days. It is pre-seasoned and has the rough texture to the casting, but they pretty much all do any more, so that said, I was impressed by the applied pre-seasoning and its ability to make the bottom of the pot nonstick. It handled anything from wet raw ground beef one night, to reheating smoked chicken legs the next night, all without any undue sticking and scraping. Cleanup involved nothing more than warm water in it when it cooled off enough to be able to handle barehanded and a nylon dish brush, followed by a green scrubby sponge and rinsing until the rinse water came out clean. About 3 rinses. So, zero aggravation on the cleaning process---factory pre-season did its job very well!I've used it twice since getting it, and while the texture of the inside is pretty rough, it does clean up easily and with time and use, I'm sure it'll smooth out a bit.Thinking about getting one or two more to stash and use as birthday gifts for family members.

Very nice and heavy
Just arrived, each in its own box, nice. Initial impression is that they appear well made and heavy duty. Got these for my woodstove for when power goes out in the winter. I can even set them in the wood stove and put coals on the top for baking. No rust at all anywhere on the two that I purchased, that is always a good start when buying new cast iron pots and pans, or should I say skillets and dutch ovens. I could see a family on a camping trip having one of these for each person to cook up individual stews/soups, or even pottage. Why not.
