how large is each can?

I was disappointed they weren't the size of real cans. Only a couple inches long unfortunately.

Can you add another strand of light to the end?

No. I had to install a female plug.

Can these be battery operated?

They are built to be plugged into the wall but I'm not saying it's impossible to wire them yourself to be battery operated. With little skill, you can cut off the wall plug and strip back the rubber coating to expose the wires and buy a battery pack from Amazon and attach them to create a battery-operated version.
