Q: Does the bagel button allow for toasting just one side of the bagel?

The BTA730XL Bit More Toaster will heat both sets of elements when the BAGEL button is pressed. However, the outside elements are only using enough power to assist in heating the bagel so it's very low. The inside elements, facing the cut sides of the bagel, are the ones that are on fully and do the toasting.

Q: Do the sides stay cool when the toaster is operating?

Not literally cool but cool enough during one toasting cycle. It will get warmer and warmer with prolonged use and hotter, the closer to the top of the toaster. (I just got this toaster today and was trying it out.) I was mildly disappointed until I put my old "stay cool side" toaster through the same number of cycles and found that it also got uncomfortably warm after enough time. So Breville may be generally like the toaster that it is replacing which was itself a huge improvement over the non cool side toaster that I had years ago. That old toaster had a rainbow of melted wrapper colors on it's side. You might not notice the heat for one cycle but even after a few, it might be uncomfortable but you shouldn't get burnt or melt plastic wrappers.

TOAST READY ALERT A toast ready alert will sound when the toasting cycle has finished and the carriage has risen and locked into the raised position. The default volume setting for the toast ready alert is 'High' but can be adjusted to 'Low' or 'Mute'. Adjusting the volume of the Toast Ready Alert Press and hold down the CANCEL button for 2 seconds until the A BIT MORE™, BAGEL and FROZEN buttons illuminate. While these buttons are illuminated, adjust the volume as follows: Mute: Press the FROZEN button. The button surround light will flash three times. Low: Press the BAGEL button. The toaster will beep three times with low volume. High: Press the A BIT MORE™ button. The toaster will beep three times with high volume

Q: Will someone please measure and tell me how long the slots are?

Hi, the slots on my bit more measure 10" long by 1.5" wide. It's the four-slice model, as shown. We usually just use it for two slices cuz we like a larger wheat or long sour dough slice and this way you just have to dunk it once; no flipping to toast half the slice at a time.
