Can these be used at bedtime for sleep

These earphones are so light, and so comfortable, you might forget when you are wearing them when no sound is playing. For sleep, with the light weight and the very thin profile, they are extremely comfortable; the clip portion never irritates the backs of the ears. To avoid the wires pulling and breaking, get a short extension 1/8" stereo wire; if there is pulling, the extension wire will usually disconnect rather than pulling on (and breaking) the earphone wire. The wires of this earphone are very very thin. Another suggestion for sleep listening, take an inch or two of the wire directly at the ear portions, and put a piece of adhesive tape on each side, holding that part of the wire against the outside of the earphone. (This looks unusual, so this is a special pair just for sleeping, not outdoors.) If and when the wire pulls on one side, the tape will disconnect, and the earphone wire will straighten, instead of the wire pulling directly and breaking. Just replace that tape with another piece.

Do the clips open and close, or are these the type that you have to slide onto your ear?

These clips of these specific earphones rotate all the way around, all 360 degrees, there are positional "clicks" around every 40 degrees (9 positions by my count). To me, this is only to prevent them from breaking, I never "open them up" to put them on, they very easily slip on.

Does it contain the sound of the music well so other people can't hear what you are listening to?

There is absolutely no noise-cancellation for these earphones in either direction. Without playing anything, you will hear everything around you. The only reason others might not hear what you are listening to, is because these earphones do not have an extremely high maximum volume (very good max volume, just not extreme).

Is the end a straight plug or does it have the bend like some headphones do? I need something straight to fit around my iphone case.

As phrased your question could be interpreted two ways so I'm going to be nitpicky. The metal portion of the headphone connector is straight BUT the plastic portion that the metal pin is mounted in is at a 90° angle to the pin. I think this means that these headphones are not for you.
