Will a 15 inch laptop fit in the External storage pockets?

It should. The dimensions are: 18x18x5.5. The outside pocket looks like it's about 17x 15x1.5.

Is the inside of the bag actually 5.5" or is that that outside measurement? I am looking to put a yamaha mg12xu in this bag.

Hi Randal, the inside measure is 5,5" or approx 14 cm height correct. You will have plenty of space for the mg12xu mixer. Maybe a bit big for the mixer alone but then you can bring along additional equipment, such as cables and mics !I use the bag for my Tascam DP32 recorder. Good luck
