update: lap counter watch
the honey moon lasted one year. suddenly the display became garbled and a new battery did not fix it. wrote company. they offered a 30 pound discount to buy a new one, cheaper than repairing it. I am sorry I spent so much money on a gadget that did not last long enough.so be aware, that the poolmate 2 maybe a nice experience for a while but it may not be for long. So sorry this happened and I am a meticulous user.

the jury is out
The first Poolmate I purchased was about 7 years ago. It was the model you send back so they could change the battery for you. That one lasted about 3 years. The second one I purchased I needed to change the battery myself. It lasted two years until the battery died. When I went to change it out the tiny rubber gasket that is in there ripped unbeknownst to me. It leaked the first in the pool and died. Then I purchased this watch. It occasionally dropped a length, but otherwise was accurate. It died in just over than two months. I called Amazon who will send me a replacement. Thinking I had a lemon, I decided to go this route instead of taking a refund. I will update and let you know how this one stands up.

Great basic swimming watch!
I love this watch! Easy to use and counts my laps as I swim without me having to think about it. Haven't tried it in open water yet, but looking forward to using that feature too.

It was definitely worth buying it.
Swimovate PoolMate 2 was a great companion this summer. I used it every single time when swimming in open water, almost daily. Very reliable and very easy to use. It just needed some configuration in the beginning, so as to measure my lengths as accurately as possible. I use it now at the pool from time to time. But it is mostly meant for open water swimming in my case. Easy to monitor progress and keep track on the distance I swam. In a few words: Swimovate does what it promises, I’m a very satisfied customer. Looking forward to use it next summer in the beautiful Greek seas.

It just doesn't work
I tried really hard to keep this watch. This is my second one. The first I got from a reputable swim company, they graciously accepted the return. Encouraged by the youtubers who sang its praise, I convinced myself that mine was just a fluke, someone was sleeping on the job - we're all human after all. Got this one. Wore it twice and both times my lap count was incorrect. That's thing number one. The other is user unfriendliness. Admittedly, I fumble with all things electronic, so it could very well be me. It took forever to find my logged swims - some disappeared completely, maneuvering on the screen was cumbersome and I ended each attempt in frustration. Unfortunately I cannot recommend it. And it's too bad - all I need is a basic lap counter. I'll keep looking.

I found the Poolmate 2 to be a good swim training and analytical tool
I found the Poolmate 2 to be a good swim training and analytical tool. The initial set up was fairly simple with the help of the user manual. I found the lap counter to be very accurate even while completing flip turns. It helps when you loose count during those long sets. The open water function was fairly accurate once you establish your “Stroke Length”. The only issue I found was the band discolors when it comes in contact with sun screen. The main advantage this tool has over others is that it counts laps on it’s own, no pushing buttons. This basic functionality allows the swimmer to concentrate on form and does not interfere with stroke form.

Battery died 10 months in - having it replaced
Watch performed as advertised. after about 10 months it died - it was used only for lap swimming about 3 days per week with several weeks off over the time period. Is this the expected life span? Company offers services / battery replacement from Time-Tec for $20 + $5 return shipping, + you have to ship it to them.
