should the rod be slightly bent or could my big younger brother have bent it when he sat in it

The rod should not be bent however there is a slight angle to the mount so you sit back in the seat. Look for an arrow on the bottom of the mount.. It should face toward the front of the seat so the angle is correct

Most marine seating has a 5To 5-1/4 inch hole pattern that fits most all seats and mounts
