this says a battery is required but also that batteries are not needed, do I need to buy one separately or not?

No batteries needed as the control unit is charged via a cable same as a mobile phone.

The robot is unable to stand up and is constantly falling forwards or backwards on every move it makes. Is this normal or it is faulty? Thank you.

Ours seems ok, does fall occasionally but not all the time. We use ours on hard floor surface did find on carpet it don’t work as well.
