Godzilla: Complete Rulers of Earth Volume 1 (Godzilla, 1)

Cheap construction
My review is based solely on the physical quality of the book, not its contents. The illustrations are beautiful. The problem is, upon opening the book and thumbing through a few pages, they began to fall out! I had seen another review that mentioned the same problem, but seeing as so many reviews had been positive, I figured it was safe to give it a shot. I'm no expert in book construction, but it seems a higher quality glue is in order. I have already ordered my replacement and if the problem is resolved, I will amend this review to reflect it. Fingers crossed.***Edit- After receiving the second copy, we experienced the same garbage quality. Pages fell out after barely touching them. Really disappointing.

IDW finally gets it (mostly) right
This is the omnibus version of Godzilla: Rulers of Earth. It collects the first three volumes (issues 1-12) into a single book. Rulers of Earth is IDW's third long-running Godzilla series, and it continues the story of the first two (series one was Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, series two was simply titled Godzilla). I've long been critical of IDW's main-line Godzilla books. Kingdom of Monsters had terrible artwork and worse writing, coupled with an execrable attempt at a "mature" tone that just made the whole series seem vaguely seedy (and made it inappropriate for younger audiences). And, to top it all off, the series seemed more interested in telling us about their lame human characters than it did in, you know, showing us monsters. The second series, Godzilla, cleaned up the writing and the tone, but the artwork was still awful, and it still focused far too much on the human cast and not nearly enough on the monsters. I'm pleased to report that IDW has taken their mistakes to heart, and fixed most of these issues in Rulers of Earth.First off, let me say that Matt Frank, the artist on the series, is simply the best giant-monster artist in the business. His art is detailed, richly colored, and quite simply beautiful. His action sequences are superb and, most importantly, clear in their effect. In Godzilla books past, the art has sometimes been so bad that it's hard to tell what's going on in a fight scene. That will never, ever be a problem in a Frank-drawn book. It's a massive upgrade over the two previous series. The writing on the books is just okay - it's not as good as, say, the classic Dark Horse Godzilla comics, but it's certainly better than the previous series, and, given that these books finally, finally put the emphasis on giant monster brawls as opposed to yet another poorly-written human cast, I'm tempted to say it's quite good enough for what it needs to be. And even when the writing isn't at its best, at least it's only bad because it's excessively cartoonish, and not because it's trying to be "edgy" or "mature". This book is definately safe for children. If I have a major complaint, it's that the book chooses to continue the storyline of the two previous series rather than simply starting new from scratch. This could create a bit of awkwardness in the first few issues for new readers who haven't read the previous books and wonder why, for instance, Gigan is wandering around injured in the American Southwest. But it's really a rather minor problem, and any lingering holdover from the previous book disappears after the first two dozen pages or so. All in all, I think it's a great book, and the sort of long-running series that Godzilla has deserved for a long time.

Great comic, horrible manufacturing quality
The comic material is great, but the manufacturing quality is horrible. I gave this to my son for his birthday four days ago. It has fallen apart. I have tried to patch it as best I can because my son loves Godzilla, but really disappointing for his first comic book. The binding came apart and the pages are falling out.

Pages Fall Out
My grandson was so excited to receive this item! Unfortunately, as he only began to leaf through it, the pages started falling out! We ordered a replacement (which was received promptly) and the same thing happened. Discouraged, we returned both defective products for a refund on the original purchase.

Poor binding
We received this book yesterday and the pages are already falling out. It’s not a good binding. My 8-year old doesn’t want to return it for a new one, so we are stuck with it, but I would not purchase it again, even for Godzilla’s biggest fan (the 8-year old).

pages falling out
All the pages are coming out, very bad binding. My 9yr old doesn’t want to return, but it’s frustrating because he can’t really enjoy reading it with akk the pages falling out:(

Great read. Amazing illustrations. Terrible shipping!!!
Great illustration, can't wait to read it. Amazing details and great for any Godzilla Fan new and old. However, make sure you order this on its own. I ordered this on its own and geniuses at Amazon decided to pack it with dog food i ordered on a separate day. So when I open it the free floating book is bent to hell because it got crushed by dog food cans. So very unhappy.
