Q: The hollow bit in the middle. There’s something inside, can that be taken out so it’s completely empty? I’m not bothered about the fans not working.

It's all moulded plastic. Nothing can be removed. I had one without fans in the past. There really isnt much difference in weight. Am happy with mine

I don't recall any "dints" on the one I ought, which was a gift so I don't have it accessible any more. Do the affect its effectiveness? If so contact the supplier.

it's a felt layer on the base, which seemed quite comfortable. The actual framework is metal and air is drawn in through the sides by the fans, so your lap stays comfortable It can be used either on a lap or on a desk/table top, and is powered via a USB cable from the laptop itself. I use an ajustable table mate that is similar to an invalid bed /chair table the legs slide under the chair.

Hello, I would think it would be fine for a 13" laptop. I have a 15" on it.
