This book is an amazing resource!
Buy the paperback rather than the Kindle version, because you will be flipping back and forth from the index, looking up recipes for various ailments, and aromatherapy; and that's much easier to do with an actual printed book. The healing power of herbs and essential oils is going to become even more important as overuse of antibiotics has created resistance to its use and superbugs are becoming more prevalent. The author is an expert in this field with impressive credentials you can trust. Whether you are a beginner in this field, or a practiced professional, you need this resource in your library. It's helping me choose the essential oils I need to buy and use to manage all those troublesome little health issues that you don't want to treat with chemicals or go running to the doctor, but is written with the wisdom to warn the reader to seek professional medical attention when needed. I only wish I had discovered this book and this knowledge many years ago because it has truly opened my eyes to this great untapped field of knowledge which is what medical professionals used for thousands of years. The book is well written and organized in such a way to make it a very usable tool. It contains a well organized and detailed Table of Contents of the 18 chapters covering background for the work; quality control; methods of use; basic care; travel care; occupational oils for working men and women; treating injuries; skin, hair, and body care; proper usage for babies and children; men's health; women's health; mature years health; and even natural health for domestic animals. There is a chapter on using essential oils for a clean, fragrant, and healthy home environment. There is a chapter on making your own perfumes, and on using essential oils in cooking. There is a chapter on gardening using essential oils and natural insect repellents. There are three appendices, giving charts for uses of the essential oils, and for illustrations and types of Aromassage; and a complete Bibliography. The thorough index is invaluable for looking up a disease or ailment, a symptom, or an essential oil or herb and its use. It contains over 600 recipes for health, beauty, and home. I would not want to take a trip across country without a map or GPS. This book is your equivalent map or guide in your journey of research into the field of therapeutic essential oils and aromatherapy. It has given me a great new respect and appreciation for the valuable herbs and plants God created for us to use as medicines--medicines that work, and without all the side effects and harmful results of so many of our prescription drugs today. I have learned so much and have so much yet to learn as I use this book almost daily. It's worth a hundred times its price and I highly recommend it.

The only book you need!!!
I have just started into essential oils and this was one of the first two books I have ordered and those are the only two books i have experience with so my knowledge is limited with that being said and comparing those two books I LOVE this book. I wasn't so sure at first, but then I started to read. the first chapter goes over basics and background and such and the second chapter goes into the actual oils. it covers basic oils and then lists several recipes for everyday use using those basic oils! why is that wonderful? because when you look at high grade oils they can be VERY expensive! especially when you first start out and you have NO oils and have to buy several bottles for a recipe. just glancing at the list all of the oils are inexpensive to moderate with maybe clove and chamomile being the two most expensive and you can pretty much treat everything with just that list. then it goes on to traveling and oils that might help with things from flying to insect bites. and recipes for all of those things. really it is an all inclusive book! later when it gets into beauty and things like that I noticed some recipes calling for more expensive and exotic oils like rose, orange blossom, jasmine, and tuberose. While these are great oils and have both a heavenly scent and healing properties they can be quite expensive. I like that the book includes these more luxurious recipes they have other recipes under the same heading with not such expensive or exotic oils so there is literally something for everyone. they also list oils that can be exchanged for others if you don't happen to have an oil on hand. The recipes also mimic things we are used to using for example, the shampoo and conditioner recipes act more like store bought items. the recipes are all natural and have no chemical bases. for example they have an entire chapter devoted to hair. the shampoo recipes use a soap base they give the option of 3 bases. soap flakes, castile or soapwort. it explains how to prepare each base then you add the ingredients for each recipe to that and they cover everything from normal hair to Alopecia! i was especially shocked by that since Alopecia is a condition that is often ignored. they have recipes for balding or for women with thinning hair. I mean i just can't praise this book enough! another thing i found really helpful is the charts. toward the back of the book they have charts to cover everything from Bacteria busters to facial skin oils and it lists every useful oil and what its used to treat. then there is a large complete list that has every essential oil it lists the common name the latin name type of plant which part of the plant is used to obtain the oil the process that should be used to extract the oil country of origin aromatherapy use and other uses such as pharmaceutics, perfume cooking dentistry and so on. really if you have this book i don't see why you would need any other.

You will not regret buying this book, especially if you are new to EOs (as I am).
Being new to EOs, I was looking for a good starter book to learn about them and how to use them, including how to make my own blends so I wouldn't have to rely on brand name blends for everything. This book got great reviews everywhere I looked, so I ordered it...and I am so glad I did. She begins with the science behind oils and the various methods for applying/using them. LOTS of GREAT information. One of the BEST things about this book is that the author keeps it SIMPLE when it comes to which oils to use. She lists her top ten oils to have on hand and her top ten oils to travel with (most overlap). With just those oils, you can treat just about EVERY ailment listed in her (incredibly comprehensive) book. On each page, she lists how to mix them and then has a column listing alternate oils you can use if you are missing one of the ten originally listed or if you just have a different preference. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that I didn't have to order 137 oils that I won't ever get around to using, because most of the treatments involve oils from her 2 lists. It has been so much less overwhelming than another book I bought later for comparison purposes. The second book will list completely different oils for every treatment, there is very little repetition/consistency of oil usage. I would have to buy hundreds of oils to use the treatments listed in the second book, whereas Valerie's book allowed me to get by with about a dozen or so as I get started. She also has chapter after chapter listing categories of ailments that can be treated with EOs as well as explanations for how to adjust dosages for several age ranges with infants and children. Having 5 children spanning 2 - 16 years, this is a huge plus for me. Again LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this book and I highly recommend it for anyone just getting into EOs. It keeps things simple and does not overwhelm you with hundreds of complicated oil combinations. Neither does it require you to purchase brand name blends to get the job done. Rather, it teaches you how to formulate your own blends from a handful of single oils you can have on hand at any moment. While, I do occasionally cross reference the suggestions in this book with my other, this one has quickly become my favorite. I guess you could say it is like my EO bible. haha! Fantastic! I love it! :)

very good book about essential oils
the only thing I could say would make this book better would be massage points etc. Im a beginner and don't know any of that and would have liked to know all the tricks and tips and more pictures :) *update* I wanted to add a few more points about this book I think are important. since I bought this book I have gained a lot of knowledge about essential oils most of all I have come to realize that this book is not as extensive as I might have hoped for I will say for the price you probably will not find a more extensive book but I will say there are better books for essential oils out there. there is one sold through Young Living that is very nice if you have access to a Young Living sales representative you might consider buying through them as many times they have really good deals when I looked this book up online it cost a fortune so I would not recommend buying it from Amazon. if you are just starting this is a great book to dip your toes into it offers you recipes even advice on perfume wearing it gives an overall view of what essential oils do and a pretty full description of each oil however it leaves out some pretty important essential oils that I would never think of leaving out of a book with my knowledge to date for instance white fir. from experience I will tell you that if you are a computer guru even alittle you can simply go to Pinterest and find what this book does not offer or if you wanted to save up for the book featuring Young Living Essential Oils then that would be the best book to learn from I am NOT team young living, not at all although I do like Young Living oils I also use doTERRA(OMG yes I said those two companies in the same sentence :-) and heritage essential oils and AM in the process of buying selah essential oils (they pray over oils by name I find this appealing) each company will try to convince you they are best the one oil company I can truly and surely assure yo is not fit to be called essential oil is NOW essential oils (for the love of god how do they get by claiming they are EO ) save yourself heart ache don't do it they're so tempting with their big bottles and affordable prices claiming to be pure but they are sheer oil as in carrier oil with a little bit of essential oil mixed in it there's no way they are over 3% maybe 5 not enough for me to pay $9 a bottle or even three do yourself a favor only buy these if you want them for smell

Very Comprehensive, Interesting, and Helpful
This is a definitive compendium on essential oils, and the author is obviously an expert. The text is very readable and the anecdotal information is interesting and enlightening. The only issue I found was that some of the nutritional information and advice was a little dated; it was clearly written at a time when health experts were strongly urging people to give up all forms of caffeine, especially coffee and tea. This was probably because organic coffee/tea used to be hard to find and chemical pesticides from the conventional products are easily absorbed by the body. Also, the use of butter is vilified in the same way, probably because of similar reasons. In any case, such information is really out of the scope of the text, which is full of great info on how to use essential oils to treat myriad health problems, including me\cfs, bronchitis, sports injuries, hair loss, acne, wrinkles, spina bifida, chronic stress, and many others. Of particular interest to me are the recipes for skin care oils that work wonderfully and can save people hundreds of dollars per year. Though some things in the text could use slight updates, I still give this book 5 stars because the recipes I tried worked right away, and the comprehensive information about various conditions inspired me to do more research into them instead of feeling overwhelmed by symptoms and resigned to apathy. The information about the hormone-balancing effects of fennel oil, for example, was one of the valuable insights that I hadn't come across before in other texts. The book is full of such insights, and the author has a special talent for synergistic blends of oils that not only work, but smell amazing. Also, there are recipes for household cleaners, tips for travel, and lots of great information about gardening. Highly recommended.

If you're interested in the subject, this is for you.
Bought this many, many years ago for my wife. She read it cover to cover. For a skeptic like me, is it science based? Possibly not, but I'm not god and Don't have the knowledge of the world. My wife loved it, and said it was a helpful book. If you're interested on the topic, this may be for you.

it's ok....
I was excited to receive this book, especially given all of the recipes that were included. However, after reading it and going back and referencing recipes/topics many times, I found that the book lacked critical educational/informational content. There is a lot of basic chatter, but most is common sense. Most of the recipes were also very basic and many lacked information needed for successful preparation. For example, there is a recipe for making milled soap. she states in the recipe that almond or olive oil would be nice to add (but does not state how much to add, when to add it)......ok, so am I supposed to guess how much to add and risk ruining the recipe and all these ingredients???? also, how long does it need to sit, at what point do the bars need to be cut? In some cases, it almost seems as if she is rushing through, trying to cover too much, but ultimately stops short. I wish her book went a bit deeper..... There is very little technical subject matter about the essential oils, extraction methods, carrier oils and how to combine them etc. If you are like me and invested a fair amount of $$ into purchasing high quality organic essential oils, carrier oils etc, you may feel as if you don't want to even try most of her recipes. That being said, there are a few quick reference first-aid recipes and remedies that are decent which is why I gave this review 3 stars. I am sorry, but I would not recommend this book.

Awesome book for anyone interested in Aromatherapie or narural living
I can only disagree with the reviews who said that this book is not at all complete because it only lists 10 basic oils and their application. Because frankly, this is just the beginning of the book, a very useful one. If you are like me just a regular person who cares for natural health this is the perfect starting point. The world of essential oils can seem so overwhelming and expensive that a newbie may not know where to start. Worwood cuts it down to the 10 most useful oils to treat most common illnesses and that really helped me to decide which oils to buy first! Then she continues to explain very clearly how to incorporate aromatheraphy in every area of your life. I especially enjoyed the uses for natural beauty product, air fresheners, cleaning. The book is truly an inspiration to try out new things for healthier and more natural lifestyle. In that sense it is truly complete. There is also a list of essential oils and their uses in Aromatherapy at the end of the book which goes far beyond the basic care kit of chapter one.

So happy I bought this!
I'm so happy I bought this book. There is SO MUCH INFORMATION in it. The author breaks down different kinds of essential oils (and also offers a list of oils that you should never, ever use), and each chapter (chapters for pregnancy, illness, beauty, pets, etc.) contains different essential oil recipes and methods of use to alleviate different problems or achieve some kind of end result (ex., helping with morning sickness, making acne go away, making your home smell a certain way, etc.). The book is extremely easy to navigate, and the author's writing style isn't at all dry or boring. She actually makes little jokes here and there and her language is so accessible. I'm so happy that I bought this. If you're just getting into essential oils or have been using them for years, you'll be able to take a lot away from this. It's a must-have for any home that uses or wants to use essential oils.

I love this book
I have bought other armoatherapy books in the past, but this book is definitely a complete guide on essential oils and aromatherapy. It has a list of essential oils and their uses and very importantly it advises which oils should be used by whom. There are recipes for different ailments. If you love natural remedies then this book should be on your book case/kindle.
