The unit does get warm if they are giving constant power to keep it locked or unlocked (depending if they have it set as fail-safe or fail-secure). However if mounted in a metal framed door the metal acts like a heat-sink.

It can be used on a front door that is under cover. It is not designed to be used outdoors. Not "weather rated".
