Your bowels will be healthy, not just empty.
I am a FEW DAYS into the week-by-week program, and I've already had a nice long one after weeks of not defecating very often. And when I did go before, it wasn't very much. After switching to a high vegetable/fat, moderate protein diet last month, I stopped defecating on a consistent basis. This didn't make sense to me, given that supposedly vegetables are high in fiber, and ought to aid in digestion, right? Wrong. In the first chapter of Dr. Jones' book, he points out that vegetables are actually NOT that high in the fiber that may aid in digestion, hence the reason my bowels are stopped up, despite the healthy changes. Here was something I hadn't known before, so I continued to read on.Although there is dispute as to the effectiveness of the fiber approach for constipation, it does work for many. But it IS possible to take too much, further exacerbating the issue at hand. That being said, not only has Jones put together a detailed week-by-week fiber therapy program (exact amounts of fiber necessary per week, the best fiber supplements, and the healthiest types of laxatives), but he also has constructed it with the goal in mind to PERMANENTLY strengthen the bowels. Some of Jone's patients, as illustrated through his periodic anecdotes, have managed to ween off of their daily/weekly laxatives after working through his program. A lot of these patients, of all ages, had dealt with constipation for months or years on end up until working with him.The secret lies in how much or little fiber to take at a time, and when it is time to incorporate a laxative (even on a daily basis). Jones explains how to judge these necessary measures, and by following the program this way, your bowels will be healthy, not just empty. This is in accordance with what Jones has said in his book (and he explains the how/why behind everything)Jone's writing style is engaging, a bit humorous, and he shares some medical knowledge without boring mumbo-jumbo. I finished the book in a few hours, and given that he provided the name of EVERY recommended fiber supplement/laxative, it was easy to jump right into the program. I did, and I had a nice defecation the next morning.

As a healthcare provider, I highly recommend this book!
I heard the author speaking on NYU's Doctor Radio while driving and pulled over so I could pay attention to wisdom and knowledge regarding the gambit of gastric and bowel problems. This book is easy to read, a little folksy at time, but filled with solid medical information that will change anyone's life who has had problems with constipation, GERD, Irritable Bowel, Etc. The regime he offers really does work, and over time, bowel function returns to normal, gas dissapates, and colon health returns. The author also was available by email to answer questions. He is a highly trained physician and backs up his claims wtih medical reference and practice antidotes. I have recommended this book to many others and consider it my "bible" of colon health. All physicians and nurses should read this!

Enlightening
People don't talk about their bathroom habits enough and the truth is, they are important indicators of one's health. This book is full of thought provoking concepts and ideas for improving your digestive health. I think the most important idea in this book is that your poop should not have much smell. If it really smells, that means it's been sitting in your intestines for so long it has begun to rot. We should all be having bowel movements often enough that this does not occur. It's a simple idea, and it makes perfect sense. When you poop more frequently, you feel better. Simple.I was unable to attempt the high fiber diet plan outlined in the book due to a newly diagnosed bowel disease with a special treatment plan, so I'm afraid I cannot provide my opinion on that aspect of the book. I do however want my loved ones with not so stellar bathroom habits to give it a shot.

Good information but a little repetitive
I enjoyed the information provided by Wes Jones, which makes you understand how your body (especifically your GI) and things related to constipation (laxatives, food, fiber, etc.) works.I like that it is not a medical book and shares many empirical insights (not proven yet with a scientific method, but working with many people). However, the book is repetitive. You will read about the "fiber talk" almost in every page.I think it is a great book for anyone with frequent constipation, and will give you valuable information that usually your GI doctor won't tell you because insufficient time, not sure whether it works or not, etc.
