sharpening? method & requirements?

I have had best results using an old steel knife sharpener (the same one that butchers use). I have an automatic knife sharpener but did not get favourable results. The blades are quite thick but the old-fashioned method seems to work really well. Hope this helps.

is this knife 'full tang'.. I mean does the metal of the blade run through the handle too?

I believe so as the tip of the he handle is also metal
