Pond Armor SKU-GRAY-QT-R Non-Toxic Pond Shield Epoxy Paint, 1.5-Quart, Gray

I purchased the Pond Armor Gray 1.5-Quart Kit (SKU-GRAY-QT-R) to seal a custom-poured concrete water fountain feature. I wanted an alternative to ugly rubber liners that crease and fold. After a full cure cycle and testing, this two-part epoxy coating performs flawlessly as a heavy-duty waterproof barrier, but it is a highly unforgiving product if you try to cut corners on preparation.Preparation & Surface CompatibilityThe Prep Work: You absolutely cannot skip the acid-etching or mechanical grinding phase if you are coating concrete. I etched my fountain base with muriatic acid, rinsed it thoroughly, and let it dry completely.Self-Priming Power: The self-priming chemistry works precisely as advertised. It grabbed onto the porous stone and concrete substrate with an incredibly aggressive mechanical bond, requiring no separate baseline sealer.Mixing, Application, & Pot Life RealitiesThis is where most negative reviews likely originate: this is a true space-age polymer epoxy, not standard outdoor paint.The Flash Time: Once you mix Part A and Part B together, you have a very narrow working window (roughly 20 to 30 minutes depending on ambient temperature) before it starts to kick and harden in the bucket.Application Tip: Do not try to apply the entire 1.5-quart kit at once unless you have a helper. Mix it in small, measured batches. I used a high-quality nap roller for the flat basin floor and a stiff-bristle brush for the vertical corners. It flows thick but self-levels beautifully to an eggshell/gloss finish.Curing, Coverage, & Biological SafetyThe Footprint: The box claims coverage up to 60 square feet at a 10-mil thickness. If your concrete is highly textured or porous, expect that coverage to drop to around 45–50 square feet. Plan on buying a touch-up kit or a second box if your dimensions are right on the line.Aquatic Safety: The 24-hour rapid cure time is exceptionally convenient. After letting it sit for a full day, I did a water flush. Because it cures to a completely non-toxic, inert plastic state, it did not alter my water pH levels or harm my goldish and pond plants. Algae wipes off the cured gloss finish with a simple sponge brush.Final VerdictThis is an absolute 5-star waterproofing system that completely seals hairline concrete cracks and withstands freeze/thaw shifts. However, it gets a warning for novice DIYers: read the instructional sheets twice, mix in small segments, and respect the chemical clock.

I used this to paint the inside of a pond fountain. Although my fountain looks like rocks, it is actually a foam product. Over the years it has deteriorated somewhat and had cracks and dents where the water goes. Prior to redoing it, the water was actually being absorbed by the foam . After painting all the rock areas to resemble stone I was concerned about how to finish the inside area. This product was amazing!! Not only did it seal the interior water area with a waterproof seal but it filled in all the dents and cracks making it smooth again. (The trick is to add the 99% alcohol it recommends when blending the two products together) That made it apply effortlessly. So easy and so happy with the outcome.

Outstanding product. Definitely THE choice for coating water features. When prepared per instructions under reasonably ideal conditions, success is assured. I researched virtually every company and supplier in the country that manufactures and/or distributes coatings for under water uses. Many, by their own admission, fall short. So glad my almost year long research paid off. This is an extremely nice company to speak with for questions and advice!

I have a kidney-shaped pond in our back yard that has provided me with many hours of patching and cleaning activities throughout the years. I live in Michigan, and the winters will cause hairline cracks in the concrete walls. They usually appear in the same area. I've used Quickcrete and other patching compounds, including silicone. None of them are ideal. So, every Spring I clean the pond, search for cracks to repair, fill the pond....and watch it gradually drain away over the course of 3-4 days.We really enjoy our pond, so this year I decided to leave it drained so I could power wash it, and uncover any new cracks that needed repair. I found a major one that I think was the culprit. Located at the floor and wall junction, this was a deep crack that was repaired with Quickcrete, a fast setting concrete mixture. I used a wire brush on a drill to roughen the entire pond surface. I then etched the surface of the pond with a muriatic acid solution.I found Pond Armor on Amazon, and decided to give it a try. It is rather expensive (explains the 1-star deduction). But it offered a nice assortment of colors. I chose gray. I followed the instructions to a tee, using the instructions for rough surfaces. See first photo for the before shot.I bought the 1 quart kit, which doesn't state the coverage on Amazon. Lucky for me, the coverage rate is 60 sq ft, which is the area of our pond. I decided to split the paint in 1-half portions, so I could apply 2 coats to the pond. Well, that plan did not work, because, like many others here, the paint started to really thicken after about 20 minutes. It was in the upper 70s when I applied this (in the shade), and that may have been a factor. The directions state to apply just enough for a 30 minute session. So, I used the first half of the paint, but was unable to put any paint on about half of the pond. I mixed the 2nd half and added a bit more alcohol to reduce it. Again, I only got about 20 minutes use, but I was able to finish coating the entire interior. See the 2nd photo. I waited overnight for the paint to cure. We filled the pond today, and if I find any issues I will update this review. The coating dries to a shiny, hard, yet rubbery film; I don't see how any water could seep through this coating.I plan to patch any hairline cracks that may develop over the winter months with silicone sealant.

I have an old concrete pond and waterfall in my backyard. I had drained it and stopped using it because the concrete had small cracks and it leaked so badly. A membrane style liner isn't practical due to the shape of the waterfall. I was about to have it demolished....then I discovered Pond Shield, which came highly recommended online. Three packages did my entire pond/waterfall. See the product description for coverage recommendations. It's been almost a year, and there is zero leakage, and my waterfall runs 24/7/365.Pond Shield is a two part epoxy that you mix and apply. Clean the substrate thoroughly, and use an etching acid if the surface is smooth. Then mix it up according to the instructions and apply with a disposable brush or small roller. The one caveat is to mix up small batches....no more than you can apply in about 5-7 minutes. It begins to harden quite quickly. If you mix up too much at one time, it forms a skin, gets clumpy, and cannot be used. And it gets extremely hot if it sits for long. Ask me how I know! The instructions warned of this....and I quickly learned to follow them. Do so, and all will be well. I'd mix up a cup or so at a time until you get a feel for it. Wear thick rubber gloves, eye protection, and old disposable clothes.Pond shield comes in a variety of colors. I chose gray as it compliments the natural stone of my pond. This is a fantastic product, and I strongly recommend it.

Works Great!

Well, I went off of what they said, mixing the kit and having a 20 minute application life. Not in Arizona temperature is about 100. Not real humid. Mix the kid up with a power mixture only had about five minutes application time. Paint in bucket became very hard started smoking so I took a screwdriver to break it up a little bit and release the heat stuff seem real chalky and dry not sure what kind of elasticity it has. So if you’re gonna try this stuff watch out it kicks off fast I would have had a perfect amount, but it just kicked off too quickly.

Would buy it again, the grays were a bit different in color but it worked out ok.

I gave this 5 stars, but I feel like the suggested coverage is on the high side, so maybe 4 1/2 stars. However if you have a pristine smooth surface that you're coating, maybe it'll cover like they say. We were coating concrete, and so it the coverage was definitely reduced. The coating looks good however, and brushed on pretty good. We did 2 coats. Like many other reviews state - mix only what you can apply in 15 minutes, and not a drop more. I've never seen anything harden so fast... One sec it was like latex paint, then within 15 seconds it was like tar on the brush, and about 30 seconds later my brush was permanently glued to my paint tray. Would I recommend? Absolutely, just order about 30% more than you think you need. And work fast. No, work really fast. Looks great, and sealed our leak. Thank you

Worked perfectly for the fountain we had that was too porous to hold water.Great price for such a quality option.No leaks now and fountain will last many more years than any other cheap fix we could have done.Instructions were great. Had no issues making several batches over a few hours and 2-3 coats were done on all surfaces for the perfect finish.Be sure to use alcohol and this product will absolutely cover the m2 mentioned on the tin.Would order again!

First time I have used this to paint my concrete above ground pond.Great product that was easy to prepare and use. Nice finish as well.Very happy with the results!

This is really good stuff. It's mixed 2-1. So, I took a plastic container put water in it, marked a line , poured that into another container twice, marked a line. That tells you 2 -1 mix

the product does work really well but you have to work fast and it doesn't cover a really big surface. But it does work!
