A Reader's Comments
This book was very well written and informative. I chose to read this book with the intent to learn a lot about divorce and why it happens, I learned as much as I hoped to and more. I highly recommend this book to the married, divorced, those considering a divorce, and those wanting to learn more about divorce.

Most of these reviews were written for extra credit assignments
First of all, you'll notice that most of these reviews were written in December of 2006. Our professor, Cornelia Brentano, one of the authors of this book, used this book for her class in the winter quarter at The University of California, Irvine. We were given extra credit if we wrote a review on Amazon, printed it out, and turned it in for extra credit. We got as much extra credit for turning in a review as we did for writing a 5 page extra credit paper. So of course, many of us chose to write a review. As for the book itself, it's below average for a text book. I found it a bit boring and repetitive at times. I can't really say I learned much, and it felt like they were just stating the obvious. Also, I don't think many of the facts or statistics that were given were true. They did not include citations when there should have been citations. Also, this book makes too many generalizations and stupid lists (like those business books for dummies). The book is written from a very Western viewpoint, and lacks cultural sensitivity. An update to this book would need to expand on the history of marriage and divorce to include other cultures and nationalities. Apparently, history begins with the Greeks and ends in the U.S.It's been a while since I took the class and read this book, but I hope you found this helpful.

very well informed
This book is well informed of the many different causes and consequences of a divorce. It contains a lot of good information and I think it would be a great book for anybody considering a divorce. It is also a good book to read before you get married, so you know whether you are at risk or not. I give it 4 stars, only because I haven't read all of it yet :)

Invaluable Insight for those Thinking of Marriage or Divorce
Clarke-Stewart and Brentano deliver powerful insights and advice for anyone considering marriage or divorce. They provide statistical evidence for the various causes and consequences that are associated with marriage and divorce in a manner untypical of most textbooks. This book reads more like a novel, as much of a page-turner as one would expect from any novel. However, the lessons learned are extremely valuable to adults of all ages. For those suffering through a divorce, this book can serve as solace or a guideline of what to and not to do. For those contemplating marriage, this book provides grounds for the pitfalls of marriage. Even to older adolescents, the lessons learned are applicable to people of all ages.As a young woman who never experienced a divorce, whether it be my own or my parents, I found the information in this book to be extremely helpful in choosing the right mate. Everyone knows of the possible consequences one may experience while going through a divorce, but the extent of what divorce can do to someone on the long-term scale can be astronomical if not handled correctly. Clarke-Stewart and Brentano not only provide information and statistics about the current state of divorce, but also deliver valuable advice for those seeking marriage or divorce. The adverse affects of divorce on yourself or your children can be avoided if you are aware of the numerous consequences involved. Overall, this book is a must read for anyone experiencing divorce, anyone contemplating marriage, and anyone looking to offer advice to a distressed friend.

This little black book is full of the most comprehensive and updated divorce statistics one can find. Even though sometimes it can overwhelm a reader with facts and numbers, the information is definitely worth remembering and applying to our own lives. There are little snippets of stories (very familiar from Divorce Lessons) that appear every once in awhile that help illustrate a point. The book gives us the facts of divorce and even though it may not be the best news to read, there are suggestions of what we can do as a society and as individuals to help lessen the pain of divorce. Some of the information and even the same sentences appear in both books, which almost makes this book a little repetitive (or the other depending on which one you read first.) but i suppose it could not hurt to be told twice. I like how this book covers everything in every angle about/ effect by divorce from the even before marriage until remarriage and covers different aspects such as children and psychological reminfications, history, the legal stuff, and effects of remarriage - which not many people focus on or know a lot about. After reading this book, you are more open minded to divorce and can see the good and the bad that come along with it. After reading Divorce Causes and Consequences, one can feel more prepared to help others or themselves deal with divorce and its consequences.
