Range.
Not tested in open field to see if the range is 50 miles. In city it seems somethimes the signal is lost. However for this amount should be fine.

Maybe 2 Percent Effective
Given common knowledge that 2-way FRS radios are low power, they were advertised as up to 50 miles using the proper channels and boost enabled. These were purchased with the grand hope that they would work at a relatively clear path of about 7 miles. They were a gigantic flop and only transmitted clearly at a 0.5 miles or less. Here are our tests. Elevations ranged from 30-40 feet above sea level, with light tree cover and low density residential. High power channel with Boost.8.5 miles: fail - no transmission received7.0 miles: fail - no transmission received5.5 miles: fail - no transmission received2.0 miles: fail - no transmission received1.0 miles: fail - no transmission received0.75 miles: pass - intermittent transmission received0.50 miles: pass - clear transmission receivedAnd there you have it. Spend the same money (OR LESS) and get yourself some ham radios.

Good consumer grade two way radio. Range is severly limited.
We have four of these units we use for multiple applications. The quality and ease of use are what you'd expect for Uniden. That said, the advertised maximum range of 50 miles is ridiculous and inaccurate. In the vacuum of space, line of sight... maybe, but in the real world, even in good conditions, a mile line of sight is about the most you can expect. In Urban environments, you might be able to use them within a 1/2 mile range.

A good-to-go option for short range communications
Purchased these radios for use out-of-doors in a mountainous environment in inclement weather conditions. The Uniden FRS models are not the cheapest on the market but they advertised submergibility and weren't covered in all sorts of garish, chromed-metal looking decor. The good:* Solid build quality.* They work at ranges of upwards of a mile in very mountainous terrain (no clear line of sight).* Lockout feature keeps fingers or gear from inadvertently changing channels.* Red display light preserves night vision. A very nice feature.* Battery life is excellent. Intermediate use over an 8-hour day resulted in 1/4 battery life remaining and radio-provided rechargeable batteries can be taken out and supplanted with any AAA battery. The Bad:* While they work in the mountains, they also demonstrated a lack of ability to receive comms in as little as a few hundred yards around switchbacks. That was both surprising and disappointing, especially since the "boost" button is supposed to push a signal 50 miles under ideal conditions. Lol!* Would like the volume to go lower than it does. Radio tends to receive and squawk loudly.* Setup was not the most intuitive. Manufacturers could learn a thing or two from the smartphone industry and make these things more layperson friendly.* Made in ChinaConclusion: Ultimately it is anticipated that these radios will be highly weatherproof since they advertise submergibility and it is hard to find waterproof FRS radios on the market, or was when we looked, so Uniden was the ticket. If you are in the market for an FRS radio, take some time, do the research, make the comparisons. There are a ton of options out there in this market.

Good audio quality
Bought these to replace a set that never seemed to work when I needed them. The old set was powered by 4 AAA batteries. This radio is powered by 3 AA batteries. I used Enloop 2000maH rechargeable batteries rather than the 1000maH that came with the radios. The audio on these radios is very clear. Haven't tested the max range but have used them at about 1/2 mile, in the woods, and with hills between the two radios. No problem communicating with just the normal power setting. I haven't used the boost function yet as it was not needed. So far I am pleased with these radios. The true test will come when we use them on the ski slopes.

Unacceptably Low Volume. Poor Clip Design
I purchased this pair of radios for K-9 Search & Rescue Training in the Rockies. The range obviously depends on both the terrain and channel. Using the 2-W frequencies, I could get a mile range with a small hill 300-400 ft elevation in between myself and the subject. That’s really all you should expect from any FRS radio. These are about and good or bad as anything else operating in the 0.5-2-W range that doesn’t require a license. There are two fatal flaws with these radios:1). Volume is extremely low. In even a slight breeze, you have to hold the radio to your ear to hear it. I am thinking I may have a defective pair because the maximum volume is incredibly poor - to the degree these cannot be used with a chest rig.2). The belt clip is something you would find on a pair of $15 toy walkie talkies. They don’t hold secure to backpack or molle straps. This combined with the poor audio level makes them useless for our training. I'll also note that the poor clips combined with the poor audio volume makes them extremely difficult to find WHEN they fall off of your belt or pack. On two occasions, I've had one drop from my pack and then used my dog to search for them while back-tracking my trail on a GPD. Without a dog trained to find scent articles, they would have been lost.Hopefully this review saves someone the hassle of a return or exchange or a lost radio.
