what kind of metal is this??

A fine, yet strong, steel type metal?

would this work well to keep a book open? Or would I be best looking at bigger sizes?

It would depend on how thick the book is. I have bought numerous clips. The smallest ypens to about 1 cm. However i think this clip can open to about 2 - 3 cm and the very large clip opens to about 4-5 cm. Possibly they might all open a bit further but I have arthritis hands and fingers so don't have much pressure.

They open about3/4 to 1 inch. They are strong.
