An amazing and powerful story!
Rena is falling into madness. She believes that the scrapbook the murdered Takano gave her contains the secrets that got her killed. Her paranoia in full swing, Rena believes all her friends have betrayed her. That Mion Sonozaki and her family are behind it all, using the “parasite” causing Oyashiro's curse as a bioweapon to re-establish the dark traditions of the village.Rika at the same time, is falling into despair. Years ago, she predicted the future. And know we know how. She's lived this all over and over and over again. She's seen these events play out. She realizes that it's going to end the same way it always has when Rena goes crazy. The young girl speaks with age far beyond her years, talking to a unseen presence while getting drunk, drowning her sorrow.Keiichi wants to save Rena. To help her. Realizing that she's been duped by Takano's nonsense, that there is no conspiracy from the Sonozaki family, he vows to save his friend. But as he does, he's remembering things that never happened.Events that he lived in other lives. We get to see the tragedy of the first arc and realize what has happened. Like Rena now, Keiichi had fallen to the strange madness that afflicts those who live in the village. How he failed to trust his friends Mion and Rena and instead beat them to death lost in his delusion. It is one of the most heartbreaking things to read, understanding the context of that brutal finale. How his friends asked. The trust that Rena gave him. And now... Now Keiichi has a chance to repay her. Will he be able to save her? This manga continues to be the most powerful mystery/horror series. The emotions are true. It builds on the foundation of these friends. A miracle has happened and you want it to be enough. You want the tragedy of Hinamizawa to end.

A masterpiece of psychological suspense
The secret is out! The mystery of the suspicious murders has been revealed: The deaths are the result of a parasite spread throughout Hinamizawa by Oyashiro-sama fanatics. They intend to keep control of the village by wiping any nonbelievers or defiers of "Oyashiro-sama's will." The parasites cause people to get the sensation of having maggots under their skin, particularly their necks, which would explain one of the repeated deaths throughout the different and separate arcs of the series: clawing out one's own throat. Having read Nurse Takano's scrapbook, Rena believes it completely and is convinced that the fanatics are targeting her for death, seeing as she once left the village and felt compelled to return --- another side effect of the parasites --- and now she has passed on the information to Keiichi. When Rena further examines the scrapbook, she discovers evidence implicating none other than Mion's family in the conspiracy. One of her best friends, the future head of the most powerful family in the village, is guilty of conspiring to commit mass murder? Somehow I fail to believe that.Soon, a friendly and well-meaning detective named Ooishi reaches out to Rena and she begins to tell him about the plot to spread a plague of parasites among the outsiders and Oyashiro-sama nonbelievers. Soon she begins to have disturbing visions of her friend Rika coming at her with a needle, supposedly containing the parasite or a cure, as Rika claims. By now, thanks to Ooishi's help and his own common sense, Keiichi has learned the truth: Takano's conspiracy theory is just that, a theory, and the fact that everything seems to make sense is pure coincidence. However, Rena is too far gone to realize this. The evidence she finds as she reads deeper and deeper into Takano's scrapbook continues to drive Rena to the brink of her sanity. What's more, Ooishi reveals to her a secret of Keiichi's: that he used to attack little girls who went out walking at night with a model gun. Enraged, she severs their friendship and leaves him distraught over their strained-by-deception relationship. Now Keiichi must enlist the help of their other friends to stop Rena from going off the deep end, having remembered events that he himself experienced in a previous story arc, which is supposedly impossible. The paranoia that Rena is feeling will almost definitely send her into a homicidal fit, just like the "him" of a previous alternate world. Now he has to stop Rena before she kills anyone else!Things are beginning to come full circle, and things could not be tenser than they are right now in Higurashi! Ryukishi07 truly has truly created a masterpiece of psychological suspense.-- David Gromer

Creepy!
We're winding down on Atonement, which is the answer arc to the Abducted by Demons storyline. Where ABD really only showed us Keichii's viewpoint of events, Atonement shows us both sides: that of Rena (who is in the same position Keiichi was) and of her friends that are trying to save her. There's finally a ray of hope in this volume and while I don't want to give away too much, it shows that thing are finally, ever so slowly starting to change in this series. After so much bloodshed and despair it's a welcome addition to the story line and I'm glad to see it. As far as other reveals go, it's interesting to see the opposite viewpoint of things. Many of them are so rational that I'm amazed that I didn't see it the first time around with Keiichi.Artwork-wise, this is great. There's some really creepy pages that show off Rena's descent from merely insane to full out bug-nuts jumped the train to crazy town. It helps to cast some doubt on whether or not the ray of hope shown in this volume will help our main characters survive this round. If you've been following along, this is absolutely a volume worth getting. It doesn't fall into some of the tedium that previous volumes have had and if you're a Rika fan, you'll especially like this volume.
