Littlefair's Wood Stain Water-Based, Dark Walnut, 250ml

I bought this last year (2023) for a small DIY project (key rack) and got the 5l bottle thinking I'd eventually use it again on future projects... Well, recently that project came around in the form of a two-tier console table, connected with industrial piping, to go under a soon-to-be wall-mounted TV - and as you can see from my photos and video, the wood looks ace. I'm really pleased with it - the colour is superb and the satin shine, being unrelated to this review, is a necessary step in my view, otherwise the stain is quite flat and mat once dry. The stain penetrates the wood rather than staying only on the surface and goes on well. I used a cloth rather than a brush, just because. After maybe 3 coats of stain and suitable drying times in between, I then applied maybe 3 coats of Danish oil, and then eventually 4 coats of interior varnish. I used scaffolding planks that I'd sanded down to be very very smooth and it likely helped them take the stain nicely. The colour speaks for itself. Really good stuff but had to order another bottle as i would like my bed frame(super king) darker and 250ml wasn't enough. Really easy to use,fast dry and very low fumes. I managed to do about 4 coats. unable to add photos 🙄

I found piece of light coloured, solid oak wood on the street the other day and decided to take it home and make it into an industrial style table and I bought some square steel legs from eBay. In order for this amazing water-based wood stain to work, it's best to prep the table first by thoroughly sanding it with course, then medium and then light grain sandpaper. Once you've wiped off all the dust you then have to work quickly and confidently, as it says on the tin, so as not to avoid overlap or drying or being patchy. So I did indeed work quickly and confidently with my brand new paintbrush and the wood stain went on like a dream. (Shake the tin before use) It dries up a bit dull but as the manufacturer recommends it's always best to put a nice Danish wood oil or some other coating, like perhaps a lacquer or varnish, afterwards. Anyway I chose the Dark Walnut and this is the result of my industrial style table and I couldn't be more happy. The tin I bought was 250 mil and it just about did two coats of the whole table all over. I would say that it's a call dark brown with a very slight reddish undertone coming through but just at the perfect amount.

I used this on some old timber boards (pine I think) I had in the shed. Without going into too much detail on the project I think the photos speak for themselves. This stuff is great once the boards were glued and smoothly sanded. I applied a coat of this dye (note this not as stain as I first thought). I used a brush for this and left it dry overnight as it was winter and shed is cold and little damp. The next day it looked very good but I decided I would like it a shade darker so added one more coat. I used three coats of satin varnish to finish and get the above results. I was amazed by the finish and ease of use with this product and I will definitely be using it again with other projects. Note I would use a test piece to apply stain first to see if you like it.

Why did you choose this product over others?: Really impressed with this stain! It brought out the grain beautifully and dried quickly with very little smell. Easy to clean up and perfect for indoor projects. I used “Medium Oak” on pine l, the color was rich and even. Best results with a foam applicator. Will definitely use again!

Ho usato il color noce scuro e devo dire che fa un bel effetto , ho dato solo una passata di pittura con pennello e poi rimosso il più grosso con un panno in cotone perché non volevo un effetto troppo scuro , e il risultato è quello che vedete nella foto , mi piace un sacco ed è facilissimo da applicare , rimane molto liquido , più mano si danno e più diventa scuro .

Ich hab meine Fensterbretter selbst gebaut und wollte ihnen einen "Dark Walnut" Look geben. Die Lasur ist recht dünn, dringt bei Fichtenholz sehr tief ein, weswegen 2-3 Schichten auf jeden Fall nötig sind. Die erste Schicht wird aber schnell trocken, bzw. ist schnell eingezogen, weswegen das keine wirklich Mehrarbeit ist. Allgmein lässt sich die Lasur auch gut anwenden, aber ich würde es draußen machen, wenn möglich, denn das dünnflüssige Zeug tropft halt schnell mal. Das Ergebnis hinterher ist super. Die Farbe unterstreicht die Maserung von dem billigen Fichtenholz sehr gut. Auf dem Kanister ist dann noch vermerkt, dass eine Versiegelung empfohlen wird. Ich werde einen 2K Klarlack auf Epoxidbasis auftragen, weil das Fensterbrett natürlich Sonne abkriegt.

Neither on the product or the leaflet it came with states how long that the dye needs to stay on the surface and how it should be wiped off. I got lucky by applying it with a disposable sponge brush and let it for 30 seconds before wiping it off. It worked for me. The color turns out to be beautiful.
