Whether you are just learning to crochet or simply need help w/ more intricate work, this book will answer all your questions.
When I was in my 20s, I was a stay at home mom. I enjoyed reading, crafting, cross stitching, and crocheting doilies. My mom taught me how to make doilies and I could follow fairly intricate patterns. But, I never learned how to make anything else. I'm now in my 50s and teaching myself to knit. I happened to find a pretty scarf pattern that required crocheting. Unfortunately, I can't follow the pattern. I even found my mom's original crochet book from the 1950s & it isn't much help. So, off to Amazon I went to find a quality book on crochet. I looked at several books & read reviews on each. I settled on this book. I think every person who enjoys crochet would find this book helpful. The stitches and techniques are explained extremely well. I learn best visually. So, having a book that illustrates the stitches and how they should look in swatches is perfect for me. Suddenly, my scarf pattern now looks like something I can follow. I am thrilled. I expect to be able to markedly expand my crochet skills with the help of this book. I look forward to making scarves, afghans, hats, sweaters, and whatever else I decide to make with the assistance of this book. You Tube is great if you want to see a video on a stitch. But, I prefer a book at hand for a quick reference. So, if you want to learn to crochet or simply need help with more intricate work, this book will more than meet your needs.

A good reference work for people who prefer books to videos.
I just got this book so I haven't tried anything in it, but I have flipped through and looked at what's in it.It has a lot of pictures with the instructions. It is mostly stitches, no patterns. But it also has a lot of problems solving such as increasing and decreasing edges, working left handed, button holes (vertical and horizontal), weaving ends, joining yarns, checkerboards, and shaping.I have always been more of a freestyle crocheter, so I love this reference work. Patterns tell you what to do but not why you are doing it. This sort of instruction tells you how to get a specific effect and lets you decide when and where you want to use it. Now I can put Bobbles where I want them!Even though there there is a whole section on circles it doesn't have the Magic Circle! Which is how to close the hole in the middle of a round. They should really add that. And there was a listing for "History" in the index as being on pages 4-5. Pages 4-5 are the table of contents and I couldn't find anything about crochet history. Not a huge loss but they should correct the index.

Solid & Attractive How-To Book
I like the nice clear photos that go with each instruction. All the basic stitches and techniques, plus more seem to be covered. I was hoping for a few small patterns to go along with some of them, but then it might get to be a huge heavy book, like another that I have, but decided was a bit too overwhelming for the beginner's I am instructing. So this is a good book for the American learner who already has ideas or patterns to work from.

Good content but need a page magnifier for text
This reference was purchased at the same time as The Crochet Answer Book, 2nd edition, to refresh my skills in a hobby not practiced in decades. Both books have worth to refine forgotten stitches, shorthand & techniques. The illustrations in this text are colored photographs, which are valuable for showing what a finished sample will look like, & encourages me to try other styles. The book's size is favored (over the other text) for staying open to the section I need; the softcover's folded back edges are handy to mark & flip easily to a frequently used page. Scattered among the photos & text are decorative motifs (flowers, vintage covers, yarn, tools, etc.) which are fancy fillers, but I would have preferred a larger & bolder font; many of the graphics (tables, tips, & especially the index) are small, italicized, or too faint to easily read. Overall, for the price & content, even with these criticisms, this is a reference I will use for many seasons. But I am glad to have supplemented its content with the second book.

Good book, was looking for more context as a beginner
If you are looking for every single knot and their instructions in one place, this book will work for you as a good reference guide. As a beginner, I appreciated the content but would of also like examples on how these stitches are used in different projects. The small square image of each knot doesn’t show it’s full impact. Also, I wish the sections were better outlined, it’s somewhat difficult to find where a particular knot instruction starts and ends (sometimes in the middle of a page). These are personnal preferences, the book is overall quite useful.
