The Art & Science of Shepherding

Of interest to environmentally minded farmers and shepherds.
It's a very well written study on reviving shepherding in France. Not an easy read though. Much discussion of farmers/ herders as ecological doctors.

Great history and why taking into account animals own habits ...
Anyone interested in how sheep were and should be taken care of, this is the book. Great history and why taking into account animals own habits is so important. Not basing everything on 'scientific' research...which has it's place!

Animals keep us in touch with real life, such bonds demand time and slow down an increasingly demanding industrial process.
The Art & Science of Shepherding is a long read but the if you are someone who personally values being part of the “emotional bond” and “finite world” of agriculture then this book will be of interest to you.I reference these two attributes of livestock production to some recently quoted comments by protesting French farmers:“Traditional stock-breeding, which is not the same as industrial production of animal matter, involves an emotional bond connecting us to a finite world of flesh and blood, to the idea of death and responsibility.”“Animals keep us in touch with real life, such bonds demand time and slow down an increasingly demanding industrial process.”If you want to define the agvocacy narrative, it's important to understand and communicate not just what or how farmers do things, but importantly why farmers do them. This book will add to that body of knowledge.

Good for Goat herders
Great book. We have a small herd of goats. This is fun and informative.

Probably more here for the sociologist than the practical shepherd...
Disapointing on the whole. I so wanted to like this book and parts of it were interesting. The subject of transhumance, summer grazing, managing sheep on the mountains ought to be recorded for posterity as it is a threatened way of life. But somehow along the way, in this book the academics got involved. The kind of people who can make anything complicated...

Not nearly as good of a book as I hoped
Not nearly as good of a book as I hoped. Some interesting information, but so much over complication and drawn out chapters. I found myself skipping through the book alot looking for the good stuff, then feeling underwhelmed at the depth they went into it. From a grazer and herders point of view, this isn't going to be a go to book for me. I definitely got $16.00 worth of new information but I was hoping for so much more about Fred Provenzas work and the customs, observations and history of great herders.
