The Great Tradition: Classic Readings on What It Means to Be an Educated Human Being

A must for classical home educators!
I love this book!! As a homeschool mom, I’ve often sought out information on how to best educate my children. The idea of teaching classically has been one I’ve tried to understand better over the years. Many have written on this, but what I enjoy most about The Great Tradition is the ability to read original source texts by the great thinkers of the past. It takes time to read and digest the information in this book. I recommend reading it with a pencil in hand to underline and take notes in the margins. Little by little, I’m beginning to understand what it means to be an educated human being.

A gem
Outstanding collection of excepts and essays of about 3-10 pages ranging from Plato to Eric Vogelin and Michael Oakeshott. Each entry has an introduction to the author and work. There many of the authors you would expect to find - Aristotle, Burke, Aquinas - but also interesting excerps from Sertillanges, Vetruvius, and the Ratio Studiorum. Over 600 pages. Anyone interested in liberal learning and the Great Books should have this in his library.

Good for the beginning thinker
I highly recommend this compilation for anyone getting started in liberal arts education, formally or informally. Note that if you have read much classic philosophy/theology there will be some overlap. A great anthology to loan once done as it can really expand the conversations between you and your acquaintances.

A worthy book
This book represents what the "common corpse" "standards" are eliminating. We are now training automatons, no longer educating human beings.

What it means to 'Gamble' wisely!
To be invited to dinner by a stranger... Aprehension!... Then to be presented with, of the finest selected intellectual fare, with ones own favourate cusine for the mind laid before a famished heart! Familiar friends new friends. The very best of the vintage of time. Deo gracias. (missed a friend, Pieper's Leisure. But then absence makes the heart grow fonder)
