Gwi agreed to help this person become King and over time his descendants to stay in power. In exchange for his help he would have the loyalty of the Kings and be the unofficial King that will rule the people. The real power is held by the vampire Gwi and the Kings were more of a puppet monarchy.Approximately 100 years ago there was a man who was deeply in love named Orabeani. The woman's name was Myung Hee. Orabeani ( now known as Kim Sung Yeol.....aka ...the scholar who walks at night) was bitten by a vampire and given a black cloak to wear that would protect him from the sunlight during the day. The vampire who bit him was hopeful that he could transfer his powers over to him with the goal of killing Gwi. He was successful but when the Scholar confronts Gwi he is weak because he hasn't consumed human blood. His girlfriend sacrifices herself and has him drink her blood. It unfortunately causes her death and he will not be able to forgive himself. His attempt to kill Gwi fails.Time has now moved forward and the King is being bossed around by Gwi. Refusal of honoring the promise will result in certain death by him. The new Crown Prince doesn't want to be ruled by vampires. He writes books under the pen name The Lustful Student. This results in booksellers and followers to be captured and killed to stop the public to know about Gwi and his life in the palace. One day the Scholar hires a bookseller to find the Crown Prince Junghyun Memorandum. Little does he know that the bookseller Jo Yang Sun is actually a woman trying to support her family as the sole provider to her parents and sister who needs surgery. This is a fateful day for these two to meet. This special book holds the key to kill Gwi. But the Scholar is not the only one after the book. This book when it finally is seen has three things listed to defeat Gwi. The King and loyal subjects, the vampire with a human heart( the Scholar), and the descendant from the female side of Gwi's family. Three different plans, or is it just a hint of a true master plan? Does Jo Yang Sun really need to sacrifice her life to end Gwi's reign of terror? The riddle of what it means needs to be uncovered. The Scholar and Jo Yang Sun fall in love with each other. But Gwi has a plan to trap the Scholar with a woman who looks like his lost love. Will he be fooled by her? Will he discover that he loves Jo Yang Sun and that is why it is hard to control himself around her and not drink her blood? He will only drink animal blood. Will he continue to help people in danger? He rescues her three times and has secretly given her drops of his blood to heal her. What happens when she gives the Scholar a few drops of her blood when he was left to die in the sun without his black cloak? Will she discover what he really is? Will it make a difference to her love for him? What happens when she regains her childhood memories of ten years ago? Will she hate him? Be afraid of him? Or can she accept him as he is? What will happen as Gwi goes crazy and kills almost everyone in the palace? Can they finally defeat him?CommentsI loved this drama and couldn't walk away. This drama has so much going on, far more than I can tell you about. I was happy that a good quality set was available. This is one of the best companies for quality video quality and almost perfect subtitles on sets.I write reviews for dramas and CDs from Korea, Taiwan, Japan, China, and Hong Kong. Happy shopping.THERE'S A DRAMA FOR THAT

The Scholar Who Walks the Night by Poh Kim
Good series set in the Joseon period that involves vampires. This boxset have excellent English subtitles… when they appear on screen. For the most part, the subtitles do appear, but a few lines don’t appear each episode. Because of it, it can be difficult to follow the story. Luckily, I watched this series on the Internet first, so I somewhat remembered what happened in those scenes, but it can be a bit disappointing for someone who didn’t previously watch it. Still, a series worth to discover.

Great movie!
Very interesting story and well-made. As others have said, the vampire's friend is underrated. While just a bit part, his facial expressions and verbal barbs are hilarious and bring a git of levity to the movie. Well worth watching over and over.

This is an entertaining spin on the K Drama historical genre that I love.It is a combination of humor (with one incident about which I could not laugh enough!), vampire lore, drama, and engaging characters.

Save yourself the time.
Is this a Korean excuse for romantic pedophilia? The infantile female is an insult to women and a deplorable portrayal. I could not watch beyond the second disc.
