Learning to Sail: The Annapolis Sailing School Guide for All Ages

I’ve been an on again off again sailor over past 40 years but I’ve had some excellent training early on and was hoping this book would provide some key good visual supplemental material for my 8 and 10 yr old grandkids as I teach them to sail a small lateen rig sailboat. Much as I wanted to like the book I found it to be not that clear and certainly not more use than drawing in the sand or with chalk on the dock to illustrate concepts with the kids.

Easy to read and well illustrated. After reading, I feel like I have a good command of what goes on when sailing. I feel better prepared to take lessons.

I wanted a book to give me a start with sailing, for someone who has not sailed since junior high school in an old 'sunfish' type boat. Accurate info, good for a 'first start', as it doesn't go into lots of more advanced details - just the basics. I feel that I have learned quite a lot here, and will be going over it numerous times anticipating the day when lessons will be available.

When scouting for a great little how-to book for my nephew, I came across this gem. It has all you need to understanding beginning sailing in a clear, well-illustrated short book. Since I'm a self-taught sailor myself, I picked up some terminology I never got, such as the proper ways to alert your crew when executing coming about and jibbing: "Helm's to lee!" and "Jibe Ho!" How fun is that? Also learned about heaving to in rough weather, which I never learned. Now I'll have to practice that one....

I purchased this book, as well as the "Complete Sailor" and "Sailing for Dummies" in an effort to learn to sail a 14 ft. dinghy, and I can easily say that "Learning to Sail" was the best of the three. It's very simple, with just enough basics to get you up and sailing safely. No, you won't be able to cruise to the Bahamas after reading this book, but it should be more than enough to let you enjoy a little freedom out on the lake. It was very nicely illustrated, with simple, straightforward instruction. It also had good illustrations on how to tie some of the basic knots in sailing, as well as where and when they're used. Overall, an excellent book for the beginning sailor.

This book starts from the beginning and takes you through the beginning sailing. This book is simple and is at an overview level. If you are teaching a class this would be a good primer.

Started sailing with a friend a month ago. I even crewed a couple races and found that there was a hidden passion for sailing. I already knew a few terms like port, starboard, forward and aft. Now I feel much more comfortable knowing a bit more and better communication is clear and makes sense. Good illustrations as well

I really enjoyed the way this book is presented. They do a good job of explaining the new LANGUAGE OF SAILING, where a few books seem to assume (pretentiously) that the words are common. They show clearly that TACK for example has three different meaning in sailing and thus can be confusing.I sailed daily as I read the book one week and it all made sense.

Perfect if you have an interest in sailing and would like it explained simply and in an easy to understand form

Das Buch ist schon etwas für größere Kinder oder auch erwachsene Segel-Anfänger. Sehr gut und verständlich wird hier alles beschrieben, was der Segler hauptsächlich am Anfang wissen muss. Da möchte man am liebsten auch gleich mit aufs Boot steigen. Also, sehr zu empfehlen.

great intro to sailing, though it is very basic
