Nancy joins Peanuts and Popeye at Fantagraphics! Nancy Volume 1, the first in an ongoing series, collects every daily strip of Ernie Bushmiller's hyper-stylized, nearly abstract comic from 1942-1945 in a fat, square format (designed by the award-winning Jacob Covey). It includes a biography of Bushmiller and many more extras. The zen-like Nancy is the distillation of a newspaper comic strip, so much so that it illustrates the "comic strip" entry in the American Heritage Dictionary . Review: Zen is the word - I remember Nancy and Sluggo from saturday colour supplements in the newspaper. Her expression ,those black eyes I always thought strange. Sluggo was a great character, a tough guy with a soft spot, ready to fight, or run if he thought the other guy was tougher. He always had a job, but never seemed to keep any one for long, and played " hooky" often. He was an original rebel before James Dean. When you read these books together, I swear they transport you someplace dream like. The jokes sometimes corny, sometimes really funny, sometimes they impress, with Bushmiller having a social sense in a limited form. They are great reads, and I enjoyed the comments by other cartoonists about why they stay important. I look forward to the next volumes.oh, Aunt Fritzie is sexy in a Dan Decarlo sort of way as well !! Review: I AM HAPPY! - I've owned a few Nancy collections over the years including the "Best of" volume and the Kitchen Sink books, so I was already a huge admirer of Ernie Bushmiller. His linework is sharp and beautiful, and I rank him with George Herriman, Basil Wolverton, Jack Cole and a few others as an artist who stretched far beyond his era in the comics medium. Bushmiller created a universe in which every nook and cranny was inhabited by its creator in a delightful way, as every great artist does. To describe or explain Nancy is futile. Part of its appeal is that it won't work as well or in the same way in a different medium. As many have remarked, it is the quintessential comic. If you've never read it, then you may not "get" it at first. It may seem cheesy or too obvious. But stick with it. Eventually Bushmiller will infect you with his unique physics and the charm of the characters. I tend to prefer lengthier comics to the short form of the comic strip, but it works perfectly for Nancy. This volume collects all the daily strips from 1943-1945 (3 years). When it arrived I was very happy with the book design, the durability of the cover, and the high quality pages. It's a beautiful brick of a book. There are usually three strips on each page, but now and then we get a single strip enlarged and covering an entire page -- a nice touch that allows me to appreciate the art even more. I see that another reviewer critiqued the two introductions. I didn't have any problems with them. They're only four pages so I don't see what the big deal is. They seem aimed at the general reader who doesn't really know Nancy, and if it makes the book more accessible then I'm all for it. I'm just really glad that this project got off the ground and will hopefully continue. I notice that Fantagraphics has solicited for the second volume ( Nancy Likes Christmas: Complete Dailies 1946-1948 (Vol. 2) ), which I've also ordered and eagerly anticipate. The strips from this era of Nancy are great, but I also hope that the earlier material (including all of Bushmiller's Fritzi Ritz!) is eventually collected. So overall, YES, I can definitely recommend this book. It's a good value and a beautiful product. Everyone involved clearly loves this strip, and perhaps one day Bushmiller will be revered the way Kirby, Eisner, and other pioneers of the comics medium are. And if he's not, at least you can know how awesome Nancy is.

laughs galore
a wonderful book by a wonderful man about a very funny child and her friends. ernie bushmiller had a great sense of humor and here are two years of it. and his art, though simple, can stand great scrutiny. my highest recommendation for loads of smiles. the real nancy lovers should search out the five kitchen sink books and, especially, the henry holt book entitled the best of ernie bushmiller's nancy. this book even tells you sluggo's last name.

Nancy is always on point. I discover this awesome comics through a Tumblr site. Thank God I did, you won't regret buying this book, Nancy is hilarious but in a very smart way. I think it will make also a great gift for someone, even if they don't know her.

Good value and funny memories
Great book to bring back memories of "Nancy". Bought it for my sister whose husband has always teased her about loving this comic strip. A lot of bang for your buck, also.

A Dream Come True...
When I first discovered this collection, I thought I was dreaming! As a lifelong Nancy fan, I am grateful that this book exists. This book is well-made, and its quality is a great indication of the care and love that the publishers have for the comic. I have already put my order in for the next volume!

Cover was completely torn off
The book arrived with the cover completely torn off. I wish the product description would have noted this, I wouldn't have bought it. I ended up getting a new cover made for it because the pages were in pretty good shape. Ended up costing me an arm and a leg, but now I have a copy that is unique and special to me.

Classic comics
Nancy is not so popular with the public as a strip like Peanuts, but for people who love comics, Nancy is amazing. Simple gags drawn as simply as a zen koan. The only reason I don't give it five stars is that this isn't the best Nancy comics. These strips are from around 1940, and while tightly drawn, they are nowhere near as tight and machine-like as the work he was doing ten years later. So, this is a good book, but the work appearing in later books will be even better.
