Q: Chart says the s goes up to 48" and the m starts at 50". my son is about 49" (of course!), but not skinny. do i go with the m, or will it be too long?

Chart said large fits 56-60" and it was fine on my 55" skinny son. So the medium would probably work for your child

I would say a small. I got a medium for my son, who is about 45" tall, and it is very large on him. He was still able to wear it for Halloween, but it was very long, especially in the sleeves, and he didn't like wearing it. The medium fit my daughter better, who is about 55" tall.
