A Wilder Time at the Movies
I remember fondly seeing this as a kid on a double-bill with the moonshine comedy "Thunder and Lightning"(check it out). Revisiting it again after thirty years I have to say it still holds up. I remember it came out around Christmas of '77 about the same time Wilder's mentor Mel Brooks' "High Anxiety" came out and the criticism of "The World's Greatest Lover" unfairly compared the two films. For sure the laughs are scattershot but I found more hits than misses. Wilder the director has imbued his film with great period detail. Wilder displays his inimatable neurotic comic brio here. The always solid Carol Kane is charming. Aside from Brooks stalwart Dom DeLuise Wilder employs some good veteran comic talent here(Carl Ballantine, Billy Sands, Ronnie Graham, Fritz Feld). Don't go into this with high expectations and you'll enjoy it. On a final trivial note, the actress portraying Wilder's reading partner, Candy Azzara, was cast as the original Gloria in the pilot for "All in the Family".

Two halves --
The DVD plays flawlessly - but - although it was pleasant to see familiar faces, by 'halfway', I was wondering - 'did I make a mistake paying good money for this?'It was already late at night; after having been writing all day and into the evening I was tired.I stopped - came back the next day, watched the 'second half' - By the time it was over I was smiling broadly!People, this is a funny, almost lovable movie -- but you have to be patient.

Finally!
I have been been waiting for this to be released to dvd forever. This is one of my favorite comedies. I remember seeing this flick at the movies with a friend and we both loved it, still quote it to this day.Gene Wilder is at this best as Rudy Valentine. Carol Kane is adorable as Annie, his long-suffering wife. Dom DeLuise steals the movie as Adolph Zitz, troubled movie producer.Lots of broad physical comedy and sight gags (ala Mel Brooks). Probably my favorite Gene Wilder portrayal (over Willy Wonka even!). If you are a Gene Wilder fan and have not seen this movie - get it. One of his best.

Hysterically funny!
Gene Wilder stars in this classic movie. His antics are hysterical. When heโs nervous he mixes the first letter of words, his wife reminds him. Later, he says, โWhat a you trying to do give me fart hailure?!!โ Classic! My kids loved it! (Shhh... we did too!)

An amazing surprise...I laughed until I cried and I cried until I laughed.
Gene Wilder at his best. A wholly unexpected guilty pleasure. Lots of great cameos by well known actors and powerful performances by some relative unknowns (at that time). Another jewel to add to you collection of Mel Brooks media. I watched this movie at least 3 times an gleaned new humor and missed jokes from it every time. This film is among my all time favorite comedies along with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and a few others.

Tear jerk
One of the greatest movies of all times. Auditioning to the big director, realizing his wifeโs dear john letter, begs his actress not to leave, one of the greatest tear jerkers of all time. Gene Wilder sets himself apart from all the Don Juanโs. Pardon, my face is wet.

A very funny film
I love anything by or starring Gene Wilder
Y**!
Not the world's best film, but not the worst either.
This film has its moments, some genuinely funny, laugh out loud moments. But not many. The rest of the film is charming and nostalgic, with Wilder's manic edge of lunacy creeping in - and not just in his scenes, but many of Dom De Luise's too. If you like Gene Wilder films then you will like this. It's not bad.

Gene Wilder comedy is inconsistent but still offers some funny scenes. It really could have done with the likes of Marty Feldman as a sidekick to help the plot and the comedy along.

Gene Wilder at his best
I love this film and really think Wilder is at the top of his game here but, having said that, this film will not appeal to all tastes. It's set in the Silent Era in Hollywood and really captures the place and the mood very well. Carol Kane and Dom DeLuise provide solid support for Wilder. The film comes on a double sided disc with the full screen (1.33:1) version on one side and the anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1) version on the other. The extras are a commentary track by Gene Wilder himself and trailers for this film and the films Silver Streak, Young Frankenstein and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother. The language selections are English mono, English stereo, French mono and Spanish mono and subtitles in both English and Spanish.
