Men's Pro Trek PRG-270-1 Tough Solar Triple Sensor Multifunction Digital Sport Watch

I bought this as an exact replacement for my old watch. Replacement bands are expensive. For me it was worth it to just replace it. I have to charge the old one more often now and the band is cracking in 3 different places. It's been through a lot between different environments, exposure to chemicals and taking a physical beating. It is a bit bulky, so you may need to remove it to get your arm in tight spaces. I don't use the compass/altimeter/barometer enough to speak on the accuracy of each. I used to check the barometric pressure when I'd get a migraine. I bought it for the multiple alarms/snooze, dual time/zones, backlight (makes a great low light flash light) and ruggedness. I sleep a lot better when I have an early flight and I can have 3 alarms set, plus a snooze. Hard to hear the alarm if you arm is under your pillow (set it on a nightstand or other). Dual time zones makes it easier to keep track of time when your in multiple zones. Temperature is fairly accurate if you take it off your wrist and let it sit awhile. If we were in a creek or lake, I'd let it sit in the water and check the temperature. It's been a long time, but I used to take it to the community pool with my son and we'd toss it into the different depths to see what it would read. I had the old one for probably 4 years and it still works. I had a problem with the original where you had to tilt at an angle to see the screen. I considered it my privacy glass. No one could look and tell the time with out me angling it for them (funny to me). This one is clear as can be. It arrived on medium charge and is working fine. I don't know how well it charges under office lights, as the old one would never return to full unless I left it on the dash of my truck to charge in direct sun light. I wear short sleeves year round, but the only way to charge it back to full is about 8 hours of full sun . That would keep it on high for a few months, maybe 3. As it got older I might leave it out there 2 days in a row (about 16 hours). I haven't been able to leave the new one outside as we haven't had direct sun in the last 5 days. Yay New York! Just an update: it's been well over a year now and have only charged the new watch one time. It was on medium when I pulled it out of the box. I set it in the sun for a bit and haven't seen medium since.

What a nice watch. It has a ton of handy features--especially if you are a hiker. The time is very easy to see. My eyes aren't as good as they used to be, but the digits are easy to see. It is solar powered which I demand that all of my watches have. I typically prefer analog watches but this makes more sense as a digital because of the features. It has a barometric pressure gauge, altitude gauge, altitude tracking (min, max, etc), a compass, sunrise and sunset times, world time, a number of alarms, a snooze alarm, a stopwatch, and a countdown timer. The barometric pressure is surprisingly accurate on this. The altitude also works well but since barometric pressure affects altitude it will drift after a number of hours so you need to set it to the height of your location prior to setting off on a hike. It seem to be very accurate as well. Just going upstairs in my house shows a change in altitude. The compass works well too. You can set magnetic declination for it and also set a travel bearing. It is not nearly as accurate as a dedicated compass, but I think it is accurate to about 10 degrees which does give you your general direction of travel. It has a temperature sensor, but you need to take the watch off for a few minutes to get the current temperature. It does seem to be accurate. It is water resistant to 100 meters. This makes it okay for swimming and snorkeling (but not for diving). I wish it was good to 200 meters, but 100 meters is acceptable. If you set your latitude and longitude it will show the sunrise/sunset times at that location. You can also look back and forward for a few weeks to see what it will be on different days. The alarm volume could be better--it is a little too quiet. The backlight works very well. It has world time so that if you go on vacation you can set it your destination and display the current time there. It does not have atomic time. There is a new model that does have it, if you want it--I didn't want to spend that much but it is available. I can say that it is a pretty handy feature to have, but you really don't need it. It isn't the best looking watch, but it is very functional and has a ton of features. I really like it and have been wearing it more than my $600 Citizen (analog, solar, atomic time, world time, 200 meter water resistant).

My review is for the watch face and not the band, because I absolutely cannot stand the polymer wristbands on modern watches, this watch being no exception. Replaced with a canvas band and it's now the best and most comfortable watch I've ever owned. I needed a watch that was waterproof, shock resistant, and that had solar charging. This is the best watch I could find that has those features that was relatively affordable. The additional functions just seemed interesting and were a bonus to me. This review may not stand up for someone who uses this watch for adventuring, and personally I wouldn't want all those functions in a watch vs a dedicated tool if I was trying to accurately judge the weather, altitude, navigation, etc. The functions, as far as I can tell, are accurate. Barometer seems to line up with the weather patterns in my area though I'm not an expert on it and only have some light reading as reference as to what the readings actually mean. I don't climb enough mountains to say if the altimeter works, though it is accurate to the elevation of my home. Compass seems consistent and accurate, which is one of the only functions I actually use regularly, and granted I'm not doing land NAV so I only need a general sense of NSWE. I don't know if I would trust a digital compass for navigation unless it was getting location data from GPS or something but it's accurate enough to find your way back to a main road if you got turned around in the woods. More importantly to me, the time is very accurate. I've had it for several months and it is still accurate down to the second when I initially set it (compared to my phone's clock which gets updated daily). The solar charging works great. I haven't had to leave it exposed to sunlight to charge it like many people online recommend to do; it gets plenty of charge just from me wearing it and whatever ambient light is inside my house. I haven't gone more than a week without having it on outside so your mileage may vary, but I expect even sitting on a dresser is enough to keep it charged. Also something I didn't realize I needed but that comes in extremely handy is the automatic light mode. You just lift the watch to eye level and the light comes on. Working early morning shifts before the sun comes up it's really nice to see the time without having to press the button, which is especially difficult if you're wearing gloves. My only complaint is the learning curve of the buttons on this thing. The 3 buttons on the right side are labeled and the left 2 buttons are not. The left side is what gets me mixed up as it controls additional timer/stopwatch/alarm settings and cycles various data displays on the other modes. With some practice the left side buttons become easier to use but without referring to the manual I struggled for the first week or so remembering how to use half the timing functions on this watch. I still sometimes hold down the wrong button to get back to standard time mode and end up going into the programming mode. Not a big deal because you can just press it again to get out of it but when you're just trying to see the time it can be a little irritating. I think it also reverts back to the time mode after 30-60 seconds for whatever mode you're in so if you REALLY can't figure it out, it will eventually do it for you. If I used the other functions more often I'm sure I would get better with it so I think this is a use case for me, and not necessarily a typical user.

I have owned similar models going back to 1994 with each sensor version. I am both a weather fanatic as well as a tech geek. I had moved away from the Casio lines in favor of my Citizen Eco-Drive Skyhawk AT last year but now that I have received this watch a few weeks ago I find I am wearing this more than 50% of the time. I still love my Eco-Drive and it remains my favorite of my well over 25 watch collection mainly due to its true "all-occasion" appearance (anything from beach to formal wear). This PRG-270 has now taken place as my general wear go-to watch and living in the southeastern U.S. I find having the weather related features to be valuable as we head further into spring. I previously had the v.2 PAW-1300 ABC Pathfinder version which had been a favorite for several years until the solar rechargeable battery started to lose a bit of its storage capability after about 6 years of regular wear. It wasn't abused or subjected to rough usage but it did get its share of bumps and bangs that occur during everyday use. I frequently used it for swimming in both the ocean and in pools and it also was exposed to water from hand washing and occasional watch cleaning (either thorough fresh water rinses or washing using mild dish detergent and water) and I never had any problems with water or moisture getting inside the case. Even living in a very humid region and exposure to harsh sun intensity didn't seem to affect the watch. Prior to that I had one of the first v.1 models that I wore for several years without any problems until the battery finally died (that model was not solar like my PAW-1300 and the current PRG-270). What makes this watch such a bargain is the fact that it includes the highly acclaimed v.3 sensor while keeping the ABC + thermo features as well as the Tough Solar option (I will only buy either solar digitals or automatic analogs because opening the case back either compromises the water resistance or requires an expensive battery replacement that also requires a replacement of the gasket/ring that creates the seal.). What makes this watch even better in addition to the improved sensor is the ability to manually set your home location (lat/long coordinates) which makes the sunrise/sunset data accurate. The only thing this watch is really missing is atomic time synchronization. For the price of this watch I can live without it and wouldn't expect that it would be included given all of the other features included. I synchronized the time on my PRG-270 to my Eco-Drive which does have atomic synchronization and after about three weeks it's still within about two seconds so this watch so far appears to keep very accurate time (with the exception of very specific specialized usage I would think that is more than accurate enough for almost all users and is more accurate than even high-end automatic analogs like Rolex and Breitling). This watch is on the large size for its case size but not excessively so that most wearers would not find it awkward or goofy looking. It is also fairly light for a watch of its size and the band size & length are appropriate for its size and the average person. If atomic synchronization is a must then look at the ProTrek 3000 line and be prepared to spend about $100 more. If you can live without that feature then this is the watch you want if looking for an ABC watch with current sensor technology and solar power. Casio has a well established track record manufacturing these types of watches and a history of reliability and durability as well as continually developing and implementing improved technology over time. I would not hesitate to recommend this watch to anyone. Just a side note - Most of the negative reviews I have read for this watch and similar other models appeared to be related to that user either not reading the manual and performing the initial setup properly or having unrealistic expectations from this watch. Please do not let them influence your decision to buy or not buy this model. If you do buy then be prepared to spend about 30 minutes or so to properly setup and calibrate the watch using accurate data for your location. Calibrate the temperature with the watch off your wrist at least 20-30 minutes to a known local and accurate thermometer. Do the same with the barometric pressure to a current accurate local reading. Location coordinates and altitude can be obtained easily from a GPS device or online sources (Wikipedia will work for those without access to GPS data or do not know where to obtain that information online.). Once you have accurate information entered I think you will find this watch to be valuable and enjoyable. If using the altitude feature for hiking/climbing you will need to calibrate the altimeter to a known reference at the beginning of your trek and if the weather/barometric pressure is volatile at the time then additional calibration to known reference points may be needed if on an extended trek. That would apply to even the most expensive ABC models so that is not a deficiency of this particular model.

I've had the PRG-270-1 for only a few weeks so I cannot speak to its durability. However, I've got a few comments, mostly aligned on what previous reviewers have mentioned. + Price: An ABC protrek, with solar power, and V3 sensors for $115? Good luck matching this one. Amazon's price is by far the best; There are quite a few places out there where you could find a watch not as well equipped for much more... + Features: the usual of a good ABC watch; nothing really missing as far as functionality is concerned. A lot of customization is possible + Display: I went for the dark over light background; there's a different version that has an inverse display but I didn't want to take the risk of poor legibility in bright light (Suunto is notorious for this...) + Pretty Intuitive for a First time ABC user: you've got to read the manual to figure out the basic operation of the watch. Once you spend 10-15 minutes playing, everything kind of falls into place. I'm sure former Casio user can skip this step + Battery life: pretty happy with the solar charge. Had the watch for 2 weeks in a drawer, it's still at the max level of battery = Size: the watch is bulky; weight is acceptable (we're talking about a $115 watch so don't expect ultra-light). I've got wrists smaller than the average guy - it is however very wearable as the band is easy to adjust. = Band comfort: the band is stiff right off the box; given how thick it is, I don't expect it to loosen much, unfortunately. I haven't found too many instructions as to how to replace the band, say with NATO. - Not atomic: not a big deal for me, may be for others - Some of the indications are really, really small and hard to read (like units and a few other symbols). I've got a really good sight and I'm sometimes struggling. This won't matter after you configure the watch though, since you'll remember your settings A few additional notes: the thermo and alti function will be inaccurate due to inherent design choices made by Casio. I'm not saying these are flaws but I always come accross the occasional comment that mentions that the readings are off. For the temp: body heat WILL alter the reading. For an accurate reading, take the watch off your wrists, for a few minutes, then take a reading (if it's a hot and sunny day, make sure that the watch is in the shade) For the alti: because the watch uses atm pressure readings to derive alti, your readings are essentially dependent on the weather. Make sure your calibrate accordingly, but don't rely too much on this. In complement, use your nav skills and your GPS. Overall, a great watch for a really good price. In my (long) search for a rugged watch, I haven't comme accross any watch that matched this very model. G shocks are out of the equation since not ABCs; Suunto are more expensive and flawed with annoying issues (see Suunto core display or waterproofing).

Well, at least so far. If this keeps working I'll be REAL happy since it has all the criteria I wanted for a watch. Altimeter is sensitive to a 5 foot change in elevation. Like sitting down..standing up? Almost! Now, measuring altimeter accuracy is another matter..but it looks pretty good. Barometer ok..again, how do I tell. I might be able to ascertain that with a little more experience. Watch was 2 seconds off (WWVB) when I got it. This does NOT have WWVB reception but tolerance is supposed to be 15 seconds a month. That's fine. Compass. Despite what people say, the compass is very accurate as long as you understand the limitations of ANY compass. You get near ferrous metal and you're done. Menus: I thought there would be a lot of digging around to find/set what I wanted. But you can download a really good manual at http://support.casio.com/storage/en/manual/pdf/EN/009/qw3415.pdf If you try to read that little tiny manual you'll go mad. Just get the PDF. The light is not fluorescent but appears to be a side lit LED. Works fine although this might be a power hog. My watch has been on MEDIUM charge since I received it a week ago. I should leave it in a window sill for a day to get to a full charge. But I'm busy so let's see how it goes. Comfort: Surprisingly comfortable. It is a big watch but they're really stuffing things in there so I'm okay with that. It's light weight but size aside, it's comfortable--fits on the wrist perfectly. Lots of adjustment in the band. Sunrise/sunset is on the money (this is easy to do though..handy!) I thought the price point on this watch was a little better than the one that receives the atomic standard from WWVB. Maybe next time..hopefully in 10 years...?

I bought this knowing I did not have an atomic receiver in it, but its my first watch with solar. After one week, I must say the new engine provides better precision on your altimeter functions, in 5' increments vs in the past my older one I believe was 20 foot. now going in, new users must understand, the barometer needs to be set for the stationary location and will remain accurate until location (elevation changes), and altimeter is only accurate when set at the start of your journey with reference elevation and remains accurate for a few hours depending on on quickly the weather pressure is changing. (essentially you use one or the other as one will go inaccurate once the other parameter changes) The thermometer you can set to be accurate while either on your hand or off (by calibration)(but take in account it takes several minutes to adjust if you change the environment it is in) But is accurate when done following its limitations. The display is large, solar has worked great so far (too early to tell longevity, but from what I ready, and a watch with a lot of sensors like this) it should be welcomed feature. Has world time so I can easily switch to UTC and see also local time, easy to change time zones while traveling, oh a great feature if with your known latitude longitude down to one decimal degree it tells you sunrise and sunset!! and you can see it for future or past dates!! I like this. 12 and 24 hour time countdown time that can do hours and minutes, and stopwatch. Those are nice feature that work as advertised. nice easy to read display, larger then some of the g-shocks i initially were shopping for. I am happy to have the sensor features if I need them at any point I can activate their usefulness, oh I forgot, the compass!! it works really well after calibration!!! This you can use anytime (calibrate if you change >200 mi. locations on the earth as magnetic deviation changes) shows you N, E, S, W on rotating display.

L'orologio è stupendo e i suoi sensori funzionano perfettamente, logicamente quando ti arriva l'orologio a casa, i sensori, a parte il barometro, vanno tutti impostati correttamente, ma è una cosa semplice da fare, basta leggere le istruzioni e, se dopo averle lette non si è capito bene, online sono disponibili molti video che spiegano cosa, quando e come fare queste regolazioni standard! Chi dice che i sensori non funzionano, sicuramente: o non sa come usarli e leggerli, oppure ha fatto le regolazioni di base in modo errato! Che altro dire? Bè, sicuramente che io l'ho pagato molto meno di quanto vale, perché ho aspettato che ci fosse una super offerta per acquistarlo e poi cos'altro dire? Bè che la spedizione è stata rapidissima: in meno di 10 giorni è arrivato dagli USA sul mio polso a Roma in Italia. Complimenti ad Amazon per questo!

This is pretty much a perfect well balanced watch that brings a ton of functions for dirt cheap. I was looking for a medium/large faced watch that was durable as I already own a few Seiko and Citizen watches for fancy occasions. The PRG-270 has a very "rugged" look to it but the face is CLEAN and crisp. Big and easy to read digits. The functions are pretty cool and it's solar powered, the thing will last years and years. When not in use for a LONG time, it goes into power saving mode which basically keeps it just barely running. I left it out of the light for a month in a box and when I put it on to wear it, it still had "H" level power which means HIGH. It also has an automatic light function when you turn your wrist, it auto illuminates, and it's very bright. Basically, its a multi-function watch, very clear and crisp dial with a great looking digital display. I have 7.25in wrists and it's not too big or too small on me. It's light and comfortable. I got this baby on sale here so whenever it drops below that $140 price, GRAB IT.

Small and light. But the backlight is slightly disappointing.

Perfect outdoor watch for me. Easy to read and once you’ve tried the different functions a few times you get to grips with them. It’s great having the essentials on my wrist without the complexity of a smart watch.
