Across the last forty years, epidemiology has developed into a vibrant scientific discipline that brings together the social and biological sciences, incorporating everything from statistics to the philosophy of science in its aim to study and track the distribution and determinants of health events. A now classic text, the second edition of this essential introduction to epidemiology presents the core concepts in a unified approach that aims to cut through the fog and elucidate the fundamental concepts. Rather than focusing on formulas or dogma, the book presents basic epidemiologic principles and concepts in a coherent and straightforward exposition. By emphasizing a unifying set of ideas, students will develop a strong foundation for understanding the principles of epidemiologic research.

Invaluable for every student and practitioner of epidemiology and public health
This is the most concise, accessible, and essential introduction to the concepts of modern epidemiology that I have seen. Highlights include the excellent explanations of confounding and interaction, the enlightened approach to case-control studies, and why testing for statistical significance is often of little practical significance. This book is perfect for public health students at any level, and should be required reading for every epidemiologist.

Get ready for some seriously tough thinking
Some books on epidemiology let the complex and subtle reasoningget obscured by the mathematics. This book is light on the maths butheavy on getting the thinking right ... and if the thinking is clear, themaths becomes much easier. This really is a great introductory text.

Excellent introductory book for Epidemiology majors.
This is an excellent book or not depending on your career/major interests. If you are planning to do a PhD in Epidemiology, this is the book that you would want to read for an introductory class. Instead, if you are doing a Masters in Public Health and Epidemiology is one of the required courses that you have to take, this will probably be too dense for you and probably will confuse you. I would suggest Epidemiology by Leon Grdis for such students. The new version is similar to the previous version except that the authors have added a chapter on the history of Epidemiology which I didnt like as it was written in a boring way and too dense.I am giving this book 4 stars for the outstanding content and being probably the only introductory book that introduces Epidemiology concepts correctly. However, I though the previous edition of the book was better!

It is a great book.
I have Modern Epidemiology by the same author and I had not bought this book because I thought it had only basic concepts but it was a very good surprise when I found many concepts that reinforced what I learned in the master of epidemiology that I completed. Besides, the author shows a lot of good examples that make it easier to understand the point he has in mind.

Clear, concise, easy-to-read book. It was required for my graduate level intro to epidemiology course and I think it's been an effective learning tool.

Great resource!
Still reads like any Rothman text but a great, slightly-easier-to-read (and as a consequence, not as detailed) version of his Modern Epidemiology (3rd) text.

a excellent book
A book really easy to read, it allows to understand quickly most important concepts of epidemiology. A must have for public health students and clinicians

Good epidemiology book but a little more than an introduction
I really like this book. I only gave 4 stars because the title is kind of misleading (An Introduction). For someone who is starting in the world of epidemiology this is not recommendable. Even though it deals with the basics of epidemiology it is somewhat complicated to read. Ken Rothman tends to write a little complicated. This is way easier to read than his "Modern Epidemiology" but not easy if you are a beginner. For beginners I would recommend Leon Gordis's Epidemiology and afterwards I would recommend this to get a more methodological approach.I personally bought this book to prepare for "Modern Epidemiology" because it is supposed to be easier to understand after reading this.
