The Real Deal
I lived in Akita for a number of years, and was thrilled to find this product on Amazon. The locals always told me Akita is famous for 3 things: the beauriful women "bijin", the water "mizu", and the rice "kome" (not to mention their extremely hard to understand local dialect). I ate this particualr brand of Akita rice the most while I lived there (it is fairly ubiqutous) and this is the exact same bag that I could get at the local supermarket.Having lived in Akita, I am a more than little biased, but compared to what I ate when I lived in the Kansai region, I did definitely prefer the rice grown in Akita. If you haven't tried it, I would at least recommend it - yes, the bag is large, but they don't make small bags of rice in Japan! And, as long as you rinse it and cook it in a nice Japanese rice cooker, I think you'll enjoy the whole bag.

Worth the cost for afficianados
This Akita rice is delicious, you will be able to tell the difference even when compared to a less expensive sushi grade rice. Price is a factor, but this is 100% authentic Akita prefecture rice.

Grown in Akita. The BEST!!!
This is an excellent rice and my all time favorite. I visited Anita 2 years ago and at the hostel in Tokyo the host recommended it. He was originally from there. I've been looking for this here. Thought I found it in a local Japanese grocery store BUT it is NOT grown in Akita. It is the same strain but the water in central California is different so the taste is NOT quite the same. This is the REAL deal. I'm stocking up and I can't wait to get back to japan.

It is OK...Worth a try in smaller sizes
I never had this strain of rice before and wanted to give it a try. I am glad it was available for sale, but, would have preferred a smaller size of around 2 kilograms.I am not one to complain about the price of items I buy...you pay the money and love or hate the item. The item as received had a lot of broken kernels - about half were broken. I am a bit disappointed with that.Flavor...I would rate this as just ok. I will mill this into rice flour. For general japonica rice consumption I will use the koshihikari variety.Give it a try and provide feedback on your experience. My package may have been a fluke.
