I've had this rod for 9 years now. I think back then it only came in the 15' size and price was way less. At first the pole was hard to disassemble. I believe I sanded the tips a little and haven't had an issue ever since. Can't remember the last time the pieces stuck. The rod is heavy. I like to hold my rods once in a while while they are soaking, can't do it with this one as fatigue will set in. Just leave in your sand spike and keep an eye on it. You will need to buy a large pvc pipe as a sand spike as the pole won't fit into the standard ones. Can't remember what size I got offhand. Finally you need a big good reel. You won't cast far without it. I use to use a smaller reel and casts didn't go far. I now get much longer casts with the appropriate size reel I combo-ed it with. There is a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, you will like the pole hopefully.

Two days ago I received my 13ft Okuma Tundra Surf Pole. It arrive in good condition and no noticeable flaws or defects. Now remember we're talking about a quality 13ft surf rod under $50. You expect to get junk--but, it's not so. This is a quality rod that works as it's suppose to. Today I took it out the field to get a feel for it. I used 50lb pound braid for shock leader, a 4oz weight, and 40lb main line. I bought this rod to be used a my practice rod and I used it with a budget Quantum 80 reel. Although it was a breezy day and casting against the wind, I was able to consistently get 90-95 yds--against the wind! When casting with the wind, I was shocked to get 110-120 yards. The rod handled the 4oz weight like it was child's play. I tried a couple of casts with 5 oz and still got good distance. With the 5oz weight the wind did not carry it as much. I made about 10 casts an called it a day. I'm glad I didn't get the 15 footer as with this 13ft gets me the distance I was looking for. And, it's fiber class and not heavy at all. The rod is great for chunking bait. Happy, Happy and for about $47 it's a steal! Great product.

This was my first saltwater rod and I followed the amazon reviews to buy this one. I did not follow the advice to sand the contacts and my pole was stuck together for quite some time which was annoying. Additionally, after maybe 5-8 fishing trips to the beach, one of the rings on my rod snapped off. I have had many freshwater poles growing up and they all last years. I was quite disappointed to have this pole break after so few fishing trips.

Here on the Miramichi during early fall the stripers are moving back in to feed....some stay the winter under the ice. There are a higher percentage of large, mature fish in the system and they mostly take bait as opposed to lures. So chunking is the norm and long casts are an advantage. I looked for about two months for a good surf rod and decided on the Okuma Tundra and I haven't been disappointed. This rod will cast a mile with 3 and 4 ounce weights. It's light and has a sensitive tip. Anyone who thinks the butt is too long obviously doesn't know how to cast a surf rod. The length of the fighting butt is perfect for getting that pendulum action to gain momentum for that long cast. I've already landed several nice stripers just today. An amazing rod for an amazing price.
