Do these get anchored to joists or just the drywall? Seems like 11.5 pounds would be too heavy only being secured to the drywall but im not sure.

These speaker's come with a strap to secure to joist were possible there were no studs were I put them in and have had zero issues other than they are very good speakers with excellent sound quality.

Can I use these for my Atmos theater setup?

Definitely! They’d be awesome for front heights or any variation of Atmos setup.
