Fascinating, Amazing Book on Psychedelic/Psychoactive Drugs Straight from the Horse's Mouth
This is a book that is positively revelatory. Shulgin comments on hundreds of psychoactive chemicals that he invented and tested on himself. What a courageous and brilliant life as one of the leading proponents of psychoactive world of chemicals he lived and this book spells it out. If Albert Hoffman opened the door with the discovery of LSD-25, Shulgin walked through it and found hundreds of other doors. It's in this book that we can read about what he found and if you are a chemist there is much discussion and specifics about the chemistry of each and every one of these compounds too. For people with an education and appreciation of chemistry, I would think this book to be 10 times as fascinating a read. This book is something you can return to again and again. I am one of those who just does not take that well to science, though I often try. I really suffered through high school chemistry, it was horrifically monotonous and seemingly purposeless to me. But in my middle age, I find I have more patience and understanding that knowing science enables you to start to understand a fascinating world. I never had teachers who could help me with that. But, Shulgin is on e of those teachers. I find myself reading Shukgin's discussions that get into the lore of the chemistry the chemical background of each of the compounds and starting to pick up some fragments of chemistry I never would have otherwise. That is as mind blowing to me as ingesting any of these chemicals Shulgin describes. And to boot, Shulgin was such a warm and humane character too, he really strikes you as a truly extraordinary person and that adds to the fascination I find with this book. It is well written and a great compendium to the on-line Erowid archives of drug experience reports you can also look up and further add to the material here. Shulgin is who he is and he knows that, so his experiences are different from other people's whom you can read about on Erowid, but there is something special about hearing about the effects of these compounds as the guy who discovered them is discovering them. Its a you are there diary of what Shulgin goes through compound by compound. All people interested in frontiers of science and technology, conciousness, psychedelics and psychoactives are recommended to get this book, I don;t know how anyone could be disappointed. Shulgin makes the rest of them who write about these topics look like idle theorizers, speculators, bs artists or mere opinionizers and commentators. Shulgin was so knowledgeable of his subject that he would wager his own health and sanity, and won everytime, winning deeper and deeper experiential knowledge of the intersection of conciousness and chemistry.

Most important book and psychedelic research
If you have any interest in how consciousness and the mind can be a canvas for anything, the book in both parts, one and part two comprehensive understanding to individuals with zero experience in this area of chemistry and pharmacology, however, it’s adjustable for experience, chemist and pharmacologist and in interdisciplinary professionals and is still relevant in 2025 because you see Berkeley is still looking at many of the compounds and part two for clinical indications such as major depressive disorder. The future of psychedelic therapy will be interesting in the next five years and if you’re interested in delight, I would read this book.

Highly recommend
It’s a great book, a great sequel and companion to the first. It’s a must read for anyone interested in the subject matter, from chemists, botanists, biologists, psychologists and psychiatrists, to the free spirited hikers, thinkers, and joe rogan podcast listeners. For the sake of knowledge and consciousness exploration, no one should dislike these books.

The stories at the beginning were awesome, as they were in Pihkal
I saw a lot of people didn't receive this book as well, they felt it was lacking in comparison to Pihkal. I would disagree. There was less overall information but were also talking about a completely different class of drugs. The stories at the beginning were awesome, as they were in Pihkal. The chemistry and bioassays in the back were also awesome. Great book, if you like the Shulgins, you should own both books in my humble opinion you will find great value in both.
